Javier Báez’s 2-run single in 10th helps Tigers beat Boston 8-4 to send Red Sox to first Sunday loss AP
BOSTON (AP) Javier Báez’s two-run single highlighted a four-run 10th inning and the Detroit Tigers beat Boston 8-4 to send the Red Sox to their first loss on a Sunday and earn a split of their four-game series.
Rafael Devers had a game-tying solo homer, RBI triple and sliding play to his left on Matt Vierling’s grounder for the Red Sox, who were a major league-best 9-0 on Sundays.
Wenceel Pérez added three hits, drove in a run and scored another on a close play for the Tigers, who won for just the third time in their last 15 games against Boston.
“You've got to hang in there,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “It looked like the story of the game was going to be missed opportunities or early game offense or lack thereof and it turned out to be a very productive game for us. ... Big at-bats late.”
Pinch-hitter Andy Ibáñez’s RBI double against Cam Booser (0-2) moved the Tigers ahead in the 10th before Báez singled and Carson Kelly added an RBI double.
“This guy was warming up two innings before the at-bat,” Ibáñez said through a team translator. “They told me to get ready. I was watching the videos.”
Andrew Chafin (3-1) got four outs for the win.
“There were some matchups we liked but others we didn't, but that's where we were in the bullpen,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of the 10th. “One pitch away from getting out of it. ... A pitch to Javey, down in the zone and he put a good swing on it and then they kept going.”
The Red Sox had left the bases loaded in the ninth when Connor Wong flew out to deep right.
Detroit erased an early 3-0 deficit and chased Boston starter Brayan Bello to take a 4-3 lead in the seventh before Devers’ drive off Alex Faedo just cleared the top of the Green Monster in deep left-center.
Bello left leading 3-2 with two runners on and one out before Pérez lined an RBI double off Justin Slaten. With the infield in, Riley Greene scored the go-ahead run when shortstop David Hamilton made a diving stop on Mark Canha’s grounder.
The Red Sox had built a 3-0 edge with single runs in the first three innings against Casey Mize.
Bello was charged with four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Enmanuel Valdez, who homered twice for his first career multihomer game in Saturday’s victory, delivered an RBI single. Jarren Duran had one in the second and Devers’ triple down the right-field line made it 3-0.
Mize gave up three runs, two earned, in four innings.
“I just need to be more efficient,” he said. “Four innings just isn't good enough.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Tigers: OF Canha was back in the lineup after being a late scratch Friday with left hip soreness. He worked out Saturday and felt ready to go.
Red Sox: Placed 2B Vaughn Grissom on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring that he aggravated running out a grounder Saturday. … INF/OF Romy Gonzalez also went on the 10-day IL because of a strained left hamstring.
FINALLY MADE IT
With two players going on the IL, the Red Sox promoted 28-year-old infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook from Triple-A Worcester.
Selected in the fifth round of the 2013 MLB draft by Arizona, Westbrook is now with his sixth organization and played independent ball during 2020 when minor league baseball was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He won a silver medal with the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics.
“A lot of tears,” he said, standing at his locker. “It’s been a long time coming. … Today’s the day I’ve always dreamed of. It’s been really cool that I stuck it out this long.”
He drew a two-out, pinch-hit walk in the ninth when the Red Sox loaded the bases.
UP NEXT
Tigers: LHP Tarik Skubal (7-1, 2.01 ERA) is set to start the opener of a three-game series at the Texas Rangers.
Red Sox: Off Monday before RHP Kutter Crawford (2-4, 3.29) is slated to start the opener of a two-game series in Fenway Park against Atlanta on Tuesday.

Westbrook feeling 'a lot of gratitude' after Major League debut 8:05 PM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- It was a script right out of Hollywood, or maybe right out of Netflix, the popular streaming service that is chronicling the entire 2024 Red Sox season for a docuseries that will air next year.
Here was Jamie Westbrook -- all 5'7" of him -- with two on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, just one swing away from capping his first Major League plate appearance with a walk-off hit. At 28 years old, this was some way for Westbrook to make his debut after taking 4,233 at-bats in the Minor Leagues over the last 11 seasons.
With a crowd of 34,662 roaring, Westbrook stayed calm after taking the first pitch for a strike. He watched the next four go by for a walk to load the bases instead of a walk-off. When Connor Wong’s drive to deep right kept carrying, it looked like Westbrook had set up a dramatic win for his team.
But Fenway Park is based in Boston, not Hollywood. This was life in the big leagues -- something Westbrook felt grateful to experience for the first time after being added to the roster earlier in the day. Wong’s drive was caught by right fielder Wenceel Pérez at the warning track.
The Tigers struck for four runs in the top of the 10th inning in what wound up an 8-4 loss for the Red Sox.
In truth, this was still a feel-good moment when you consider the long journey it took for Westbrook to get here.
“It was nuts,” Westbrook said. “If you’re gonna get in there, I guess that’s the best time. Get thrown right into the fire. We obviously had a chance to win the game there, so I was thinking, ‘Let’s have a good at-bat.’ The crowd was loud. When it got to 3-1, I kind of had to refocus. But it was everything I dreamed of.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who sent the right-handed-hitting Westbrook up to hit for Wilyer Abreu because lefty Andrew Chafin was pitching for the Tigers, started visualizing the scenario an inning earlier.
“We knew that they [probably] only had one lefty available, but Chafin was probably only going to be in an emergency kind of thing,” Cora said. “While the inning was going I was like, ‘Yeah, it's going to happen,’ and it was a great at-bat. We were [hoping] for more, like a walk-off, what a story [that would have been]. But it was a big league at-bat.”
Cora has a saying to every player once they make their debut. “You’re a big leaguer now.”
Such is the case for Westbrook, who is expected to make his first Major League start on Tuesday night against the Braves.
When Vaughn Grissom and Romy Gonzalez both went on the injured list with hamstring strains on Sunday, Westbrook was the corresponding roster move he always wanted to be.
Triple-A Worcester manager Chad Tracy called Westbrook in his hotel room in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday and told him to hustle to Boston. Westbrook gathered his wife and seven-year-old son, and they were on their way.
“[Tracy] called me and said, ‘Hey, I’m sure there’s been a lot of managers throughout your career who wanted to give you this call and I’m happy it’s me, and you’re going to the big leagues,’” Westbrook said. “I don’t really know what he said after that. That was all I needed to hear.”
Westbrook was a Red Sox fan growing up in Springfield, Mass., but moved to Arizona when he was 10 years old.
“A lot of tears,” Westbrook said. “I just wanted to make sure the manager was serious and he wasn’t joking with me. I’m still kind of at a loss for words. Just a lot of gratitude.”
Did Westbrook ever start to lose hope that his dream would become a reality?
“Yeah, absolutely. Pretty often, honestly,” said Westbrook. “But I’m just happy I kept showing up, regardless of how it was going, where I was at. Today is a day I’ve always dreamed of.”
Then again, when Westbrook was taken by his hometown D-backs out of high school in the 2013 Draft, he would have never imagined it would take him 11 years to get to the Major Leagues.
“If you were to ask me on Draft day coming out of high school, I would have told you I would have made $200 million and played in the big leagues for 15 years,” Westbrook said. “Everybody’s story is different, but it’s so much sweeter now and I wouldn’t want it any other way, so it’s been a long time coming for sure. It’s a beautiful day, it really is.”

Red Sox lose: Rafael Devers HR ties it but Cam Booser allows 4 runs in 10th

BOSTON — Rafael Devers tied it 4-4 in the eighth with a 408-foot home run to center field.
He then made a terrific diving stop to his left to field Matt Vierling’s grounder in the ninth inning. He fired to first base for the second out.
But the Red Sox squandered a two-out, bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the ninth, then Cam Booser allowed four runs in the 10th.
Boston lost 8-4 here at Fenway Park. Detroit salvaged a split of the four-game series.
Booser allowed the automatic runner to score and then three more runs in the top of the 10th inning. Andy Ibáñez’s RBI double put Detroit ahead. With two outs, Javier Báez ripped a two-run single to put the Tigers ahead 7-4. Carson Kelly’s RBI double made it 8-4.
Devers went 2-for-4 with a triple, homer and walk.
Sox rally in ninth but don’t score
The Red Sox made two quick outs to begin the bottom of the ninth inning when Reese McGuire popped out and Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out. But then Rob Refsnyder singled, Jarren Duran walked and pinch hitter Jamie Westbrook (first MLB plate appearance) walked to load the bases.
Connor Wong pinch hit for Dominic Smith and drove a 358-foot fly ball to right field that kept carrying before Wenceel Pérez made the catch.
Boston takes earlier lead
Enmanuel Valdez got things started for the Red Sox on Sunday after belting two homers and a double Saturday. His two-out RBI single (110.8 mph off the bat) put Boston ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Wilyer Abreu, who doubled with one out, scored.
Boston went ahead 2-0 in the second inning on Jarren Duran’s two-out RBI single (102.9 mph off the bat) to center field.
Devers’ RBI triple in the third inning gave the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.
It was Devers’ second triple in six games. Before that, he had last tripled May 18, 2022 at Fenway Park against the Astros.
Bello can’t hold 3-0 lead
The Red Sox offense handed Brayan Bello a 3-0 lead but the righty couldn’t hold it.
The 25-year-old pitched 6 ⅓ innings and allowed four runs, eight hits and three walks while striking out five.
The Tigers cut it 3-1 in fifth inning when Gio Urshela — who led off with a double — scored on Bello’s wild pitch. They cut it to 3-2 in the sixth inning on Urshela’s RBI sac fly to center field. Wenceel Pérez just beat Ceddanne Rafaela’s throw from center to score.
Detroit plated two runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Bello struck out the first batter but Matt Vierling’s weak infield single (65.9 mph off the bat) and Riley Greene’s blistering single (109.3 mph off the bat) knocked Bello out of the game.
Justin Slaten replaced Bello and allowed both inherited runners to score. Pérez’s RBI double tied it and Mark Canha’s RBI groundout to shortstop put the Tigers ahead 4-3.

Mac Cerullo @maccerullo Wilyer Abreu slipped in the dugout at one point and twisted his right ankle. Alex Cora says he’s receiving treatment and they’ll know more by Tuesday.
Wilyer Abreu say he feels fine and doesn’t anticipate missing any time.

Tyler Milliken ⚾️ @tylermilliken_ One of the more painful losses of the season.
Fair to question how long Brayan Bello was left out there. 86 pitches going into the 7th, but he wasn’t too sharp in the 6th. You had a rested bullpen with your best arms fresh. Slaten, Martin, Jansen.
Still had a chance to win it in the 9th. Didn’t help that you got screwed in the 10th by an umpire crew that couldn’t see an angle we all had within seconds. Simply garbage.

Tyler Milliken ⚾️ @tylermilliken_ Alex Cora wasn’t asked directly about Chris Martin, but he said the bullpen was in a “bind.”
Martin hasn’t worked since Thursday. Ended up throwing 19 pitches that night. Wonder if something is bothering him again. Maybe they were looking to take advantage of the off-day tomorrow.
If Martin wasn’t available, that at least explains the Bello/bullpen usage a bit more.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Thanks to better zone awareness, Rafael Devers continues to mature as a hitter for the Red SoxBy Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 2, 2024, 2 minutes ago Rafael Devers is a more mature hitter this year. Devers has hit a lot of highs and lows throughout much of his career. But this year, he’s managed to avoid that. To some degree, Devers’s maturation at the dish has a lot to do with his zone awareness. He entered Sunday walking at a 12 percent clip, the highest of his career. He added another walk while going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in the Red Sox’ 8-4, 10-inning loss to the Tigers at Fenway Park. “”I think controlling the strike zone is helping him,” manager Alex Cora said before the game. “He’s not chasing the fastball like he used to. And understanding who he is in the lineup, right? He knows that there’s going to be certain situations that he might get one pitch to hit and just be ready for that one, and be humble enough to take your walk. It seems like now he’s in a great place. He’s been on time with the fastball. Just taking what they give him, too. Going the other way. Saturday, although he expanded in the first [at-bat], [he shot] the ball the other way later against the lefty. He’s in a good place.” Devers is hitting .283/.376/.549 with a .925 OPS and 11 homers. The figure that stands out is the on-base percentage. Devers has never had that much separation between his batting average and on-base percentage. Even during his breakout season in 2019 when he hit .311, his on-base percentage was just .361. Cora also mentioned he believes Devers has been steady at third base, although the metrics don’t show it. “The one thing — I know the numbers don’t back me up, the numbers will never back me up but he’s playing good third base,” said Cora. “He’s playing good third base. He’s moving his feet. The play he made Saturday, he goes backhand, one-hopper to first.” Duo on injured list Vaughn Grissom was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. Grissom’s strain is considered mild, but that could change as the second baseman had a scheduled MRI scheduled for Sunday. Grissom missed much of spring training with a left hamstring strain. “He feels like it wasn’t as bad as in spring training but getting imaging so we’ll know,” said Cora. “It’s hard, but it is what it is, right? He’s only 23. So I think getting him stronger, helping him with structure with everything to become a big leaguer. He played before but was a rookie. Hopefully this time we can help him with everything and I think getting stronger is the main goal here.” Romy Gonzalez also was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain, retroactive to May 31. The Sox selected infielder Jamie Westbrook from Triple A Worcester and recalled Bobby Dalbec. “Romy was banged up [Saturday] and that’s why he didn’t play,” said Cora. “Obviously Vaughn, what happened. He’s actually getting an MRI to see where we are at. We don’t expect Romy’s to be that long. Just kind of like Tyler O’Neill , we have to make sure he’s healthy.” Infield shuffle
With Gonzalez and Grissom on the IL, Enmanuel Valdez will see a lot of time at second base and Westbrook will play against lefties. When asked if Ceddanne Rafaela would shift back to shortstop, Cora said only against lefties. David Hamilton will get the bulk of the time at the position. “Valdy is going to play. Westy is going to play against lefties, most likely. We’ll see how we go about shortstop. Obviously, now we got Bobby and we were joking, Raf’s been all over me the last 15 days, the line shifts, saying, you know, you’ve become very analytical. But I think we can go [Sunday] a bunch of lefties and if they bring in a lefty in the middle of the game, we can bring in the righties. We’ll play the matchups.” … Masataka Yoshida (thumb sprain) took batting practice on the field Saturday and came out of it without incident. “He felt great,” said Cora.
