Previewing the Red Sox's two-game set vs. the Braves
Mike Masala 06-03-2024 • 3 min read
After splitting their four-game series with the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox are set to host the Atlanta Braves for a two-game set.
This will be the second time that the two teams are meeting this season, with the Braves winning the first two battles at Truist Park earlier in the year.
Boston has played 60 games this season, posting a 30-30 record, and they're 13-17 at home. Atlanta has played 57 games, going 33-24 with a 14-12 record on the road.
Here's a quick look at each matchup: GAME 1
7Pm
The Red Sox are sending Kutter Crawford to the mound in the first game, and the Braves will send out Max Fried.
Crawford, 28, has been solid for Boston this year, posting a 3.97 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He pitched against Atlanta earlier in the year, allowing two earned on five hits and two walks over six innings. He's allowed hits to three Braves in his career - Jarred Kelenic (2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs), Matt Olson (1-for-3) and Austin Riley (1-for-3).
Fried, 30, has been great for Atlanta, recording a 2.63 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in his 11 starts. Three Red Sox have hits off of him - Garrett Cooper (5-for-16 with two RBIs and three walks), Rafael Devers (1-for-3 with an RBI) and Dominic Smith (1-for-6 with a walk). GAME 2
1:30pm
In the last game, Boston will start Nick Pivetta, and Atlanta will use Spencer Schwellenbach.
Pivetta, 31, hasn't been the best this season for the Red Sox, posting a 4.08 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in his seven starts. He allowed five runs on seven hits, three home runs and one walk over four innings against the Braves earlier this year. Nine Braves have hit off of him - Kelenic (1-for-5), Olson (2-for-10 with a home run, two RBIs and three walks) Riley (4-for-18 with two home runs, four RBIs and two walks), Ozzie Albies (7-for-33 with three RBIS), Orlando Arcia (6-for-7 with two home runs, four RBIs and a walk), Travis d'Arnaud (3-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs), Adam Duvall (3-for-9), Sean Murphy (3-for-10 with three RBIs) and Marcell Ozuna (8-for-26 with six home runs and 14 RBIs).
Schwellenbach, 24, is a rookie who just made his debut last Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in the loss. He's the Braves No. 3 prospect.

Braves hope bats awaken vs. Red Sox FLM
The Atlanta Braves will attempt to jump-start their slumping offense when they visit the Boston Red Sox for the opener of a two-game series Tuesday night.
The Braves averaged 3.4 runs per game in May, which was fewer than every major league team except the White Sox and Reds. Atlanta scored nine runs in a 11-9 loss to Oakland on Saturday, but was held to seven hits in a 3-1 victory over the A's on Sunday.
"I look through individually and see a lot of positives, quite honestly, with some guys offensively, which is what we've been trying to do," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "We haven't been playing bad baseball -- we've been playing good baseball -- we just haven't hit. I see light at the end of the tunnel with a bunch of those guys.
"I see a lot of really good things out of the offense, and the good thing is these guys have been struggling offensively and they've just been playing the heck out of defense. ... From my seat the hitting thing is going to come. I can't go in there and blow anything up because we're not playing bad baseball. We're playing good baseball, we're just not hitting."
Atlanta will be facing a Boston team trying to create some positive energy. The Red Sox lost two out of three games against Milwaukee and two out of three against Baltimore before splitting four games against Detroit in a series that ended Sunday. Boston had a 3-0 lead in Sunday's game, but ended up losing 8-4 in 10 innings.
Boston manager Alex Cora said although his team was in position to win the series against Detroit, he was not frustrated with Sunday's loss.
"Not really," he said. "We know where we're at. We were playing five rookies today. We got to be realistic. We're playing good baseball, that's the thing. We had a chance to win three out of four. It didn't happen, but for some reason with this group we don't get frustrated. Just keep teaching them the game and help them to be better.
"We got a tough one coming up with the Braves. Hopefully we win it and then go to Chicago (White Sox) and have a good weekend over there. It'll be good for us this week to gain some momentum."
Boston's Rafael Devers went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a triple and a game-tying home run in the eighth inning during Sunday's loss. Devers enters Tuesday's game batting .283 with 11 home runs, 29 RBIs and a .924 OPS.
"He keeps getting better and he understands who he is, not only on this team but in the industry," Cora said. "He's one of the best players in the league."
Left-hander Max Fried (5-2, 2.97 ERA) is Atlanta's probable starter for Tuesday's game. Fried pitched eight innings in a 2-0 victory over Washington last Tuesday. He allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked one.
Fried is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in his only career start against Boston. He gave up two runs on five hits in five innings, struck out five and walked two.
Right-hander Kutter Crawford (2-4, 3.29) is scheduled to start for Boston. Crawford did not factor in the decision in his only career appearance against Atlanta. On May 7, he surrendered two runs on five hits in six innings, struck out six and walked two in a 4-2 loss at Atlanta.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Ceddanne Rafaela’s wizardry in center field certainly garnering attention By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 3, 2024, 10:09 p.m.
The Red Sox knew they needed Ceddanne Rafaela on the club’s Opening Day roster.
Despite some of his offensive flaws, his defense in center field was something the Sox haven’t seen since Jackie Bradley Jr. patrolled there for close to a decade.
Rafaela glides as he pursues the ball at full speed. Even though he’s generously listed at just 5 feet 9 inches, he harnesses long strides like a lanky track star. His head remains steady, too, during his chase.
And when it’s time to actually make the play, Rafaela flashes equal skill and wizardry.
Even though some of the advanced metrics don’t reflect his prowess — Rafaela is just in the 43rd percentile in outs above average, per Baseball Savant — if you watch the game, you’ll understand just how special he is in center.
Just ask Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.
“He’s incredible,” said Hinch over the weekend at Fenway Park. “I mean watching him for just one series we saw him in spring, I think he might have played infield in one of the games and outfield in the other.
“But seeing him in this ballpark, in a very difficult place to play center where there’s a lot of risk and reward, those are as good a jumps in center as you’ll see in the big leagues across the board.”
One jump in particular caught Hinch’s attention. In the top of the sixth inning Saturday with one out, a runner on second, and Brennan Bernardino on to pitch, Wenceel Pérez laced a line drive toward the gap in right-center. The ball began its descent quickly, and what should have been an easy RBI double ended in a diving grab by Rafaela, who then doubled off the runner at second.
The ball had a five percent catch probability. That’s the wizardry.
The skill also shows off Rafaela’s footwork. Take the Sox’ most recent series against the Orioles, for instance. On May 29 in the second inning, Baltimore’s Jorge Mateo tagged a sharply hit ball to left-center off Kutter Crawford. Rafaela closed on the ball quickly and made the play.
That Rafaela caught it with runners on first and second wasn’t what caught the eye. You knew, somehow, he would get to it.
What stood out was how Rafaela used speed to his advantage. While most would have caught the ball on the run, likely meaning the runners could tag up, Rafaela, knowing he was at the spot already, got behind the ball (footwork), giving him the chance to come in on the catch and deliver a strong throw back into the infield — keeping both runners in place.
“You name your favorite center fielder, and in a short look at him, he looks as defensively impressive as any of them,” said Hinch. Honors for Teel
Red Sox top catching prospect Kyle Teel was named the Eastern League Player of the Week after hitting .417 with a .517 on-base percentage, three homers, and 11 RBI for Double A Portland. Teel’s homers included a three-run game-tying homer in the ninth Friday, and a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth Saturday … Tyler O’Neill (knee) received a cortisone shot over the weekend and is on track to be reinstated from the injured list Wednesday … Chris Sale will make his return to Fenway for the two-game set against the Braves, but will not make a start since he pitched against the Athletics Saturday. Sale was recently named National League Pitcher of the Month for May. He made five starts, allowing just two runs across 32 innings (0.56 ERA), striking out 45 and walking just two … Here are the probable starters for the series against Atlanta: Max Fried vs. Crawford Tuesday, and Spencer Schwellenbach against Nick Pivetta Wednesday … The Braves are 33-24. The 30-30 Sox are 7-18 against teams over .500 this season.

BOSTON — Right fielder Wilyer Abreu will be placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, manager Alex Cora said on his weekly appearance with WEEI’s Jones & Mego with Arcand.
The Red Sox will recall catcher Tyler Heineman from Triple-A Worcester, according to a source.
Bobby Dalbec will start in right field Tuesday against the Braves here at Fenway Park. Dalbec has never appeared in a game in the outfield in the majors but he has made 14 starts in right field for Worcester this year.
Abreu injured his ankle when he tripped down the dugout stairs late in Sunday’s game.
Abreu has emerged as an AL Rookie of the Year candidate. The 24-year-old is batting .272 with a .344 on-base percentage, .485 slugging percentage, .829 OPS, six homers, 14 doubles, two triples, 22 RBIs, 26 runs, seven steals, 19 walks and 49 strikeouts in 53 games (189 plate appearances).
Heineman is 0-for-1 with a hit by pitch in one game with Boston this year. The 32-year-old has batted .235 with a .398 on-base percentage, .338 slugging percentage, .736 OPS, two homers and one double in 22 games (90 plate appearances) for Worcester.

The Red Sox are hopeful Tyler O’Neill’s stint on the injured list will come to an end Wednesday.
Boston manager Alex Cora said during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Jones & Mego With Arcand” that the injured outfielder will begin a rehab assignment with the Worcester Red Sox on Tuesday night at Polar Park. The goal is for O’Neill to get four at-bats. Astros vs Twins: Ronel Blanco’s Return and Game Analysis
“And then hopefully he’s fine and he’ll be with us tomorrow. That’s that’s the goal. We knew that it was going to be short-term, but we really want him to go down there, at least get four at-bats. If he needs eight, he gets eight. But just to get your feet wet in the batter’s box, compete at that level and then be ready for us.”
O’Neill was placed on the 10-day injured list with knee inflammation on May 29. He admitted it was something he had “been grinding through” before the IL stint.
“Felt it more so on that last swing that I took kind of coming out of the box,” he said of the injury. “Feel like my cleat got caught or something in the batter’s box there. So it didn’t feel too good.”
The 28-year-old began the season with a hot bat for Boston. O’Neill cooled off a bit in May, but was batting .236 with a .343 on-base percentage, 11 homers, six doubles, 17 RBI and 29 runs before the injury.
The Red Sox recalled Enmanuel Valdez from Worcester to replace O’Neill on the roster.
Despite likely getting one player back this week, the Red Sox were dealt with another injury. Cora told WEEI that Wilyer Abreu will go on the injured list with an ankle sprain suffered when he slipped in the dugout over the weekend. Red Sox hopeful injured OF will be back with team Wednesday

utter horseshit
2-0 Braves.
and I am gonna mute the game as O'Brien is sickening.
