RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox place Wilyer Abreu on 10-day injured list with ankle sprain By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 4, 2024, 11:37 p.m.
The Red Sox placed Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle sprain. The club recalled catcher Tyler Heineman from Triple A Worcester in order to fill the roster spot vacated by the outfielder.
Abreu was injured in Sunday’s contest against the Tigers at Fenway Park. He slipped down the Sox’ dugout step.
“Yeah, obviously, it’s a little bit disappointing to have to go to the IL,” Abreu said prior to the Sox’ 8-3 loss Tuesday night to the Braves at Fenway.. “Now I just need to recover and try to get right as soon as possible.”
Whether or not Abreu will need more than the minimum number of days is still to be determined.
Abreu, in his first full season in the majors, has been one of the team’s best players, providing an elite bat in the heart of the order combined with exceptional play in right field. He boasts an impressive line of .272/.344/.485 with an .829 OPS and six homers. Defensively, Abreu has been one of the best at his position and was tied for second in the majors with six defensive runs saved in right.
The news only adds to the list of the Sox’ injury woes. The team has 13 players on the IL.
Left fielder Tyler O’Neill (knee) is set to return after emerging healthy from Tuesday’s game as the designated hitter (0 for 3, strikeout) for Triple A Worcester. Manager Alex Cora said there’s a good chance O’Neill will be active for Wednesday’s series finale, but since spring training, the Sox have never featured the club at full strength.
Cora maintains his team must continue to push forward.
“I get up [in the morning] and run 4 miles,” Cora said. That’s the way it is. You know, it’s part of it. You can’t stop now. We’ve been good, we’ve been bad, we’ve been OK. But we can’t stop. I’m not going to stop. That’s the attitude we have. There’s no excuses. No feeling sorry for the group.
“We’ve been through this [expletive] for two years and we have to turn the page. We have to be better than [our opponent]. And we’re doing that. I think everybody feels around here — [the media], too, that it’s a different attitude in that clubhouse.” Slow going for Casas’s recovery
Triston Casas, recovering from a ribcage strain, aimed to return from the 60-day injured list on June 21, the first day he was eligible. However, considering Casas still isn’t swinging a bat, that date is very much unlikely.
Cora revealed that while the first baseman has been taking grounders and working out in the weight room, Casas is still experiencing pain in that area when he swings.
“When he [rotates], he still feels it,” Cora said. So whenever he feels better about it and he doesn’t feel pain, then is the next step. It’s not about treatment or whatever. It just kind of had to heal on its own.”
The Sox have felt the impact of losing Casas, who was a force in the middle of the order in just his second full season. The left handed hitter had a line of .244/.344/.513 with an .857 OPS and six homers in just 22 games prior to the injury. Yoshida in line for rehab stint
There’s a chance Masataka Yoshida (thumb sprain) will begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend. The designated hitter’s timetable for a return to the parent club, however, will be based on how he feels.
“I think it’s up to him,” Cora said. “We can speed up the process with [pitching machines] and all that but there’s nothing more realistic than getting at-bats in really game situations. We will see how he reacts from it.” Hopes rest with Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez (hamstring strain) is progressing. The Red Sox remain hopeful the utility player will return to the club as soon as he’s eligible to come off the injured list, which would be as soon as Sunday … Though he’s not starting this series for the Braves, Chris Sale made his return to Fenway and following a video tribute in between innings, he received a lukewarm ovation … Rehabbing reliever Isaiah Campbell (shoulder) pitched one inning for Worcester, yielding one hit and an unearned run … Hall of Famer and Billerica native Tom Glavine is doing TV work for the Braves for the two-game series. Now 58, Glavine came to Boston a few days ago and has been spending time with family and friends … The NBA’s Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy made a pregame appearance at Fenway, part of its tour of Boston before Thursday’s Game 1 of the Finals between the Celtics and Mavericks at TD Garden. Former Celtics center and current ESPN basketball analyst Kendrick Perkins was also at Fenway. The 2008 NBA champion posed for photos with fans and took batting practice on the field Red Sox Hall of Famer David Ortiz was spotted in the Green Monster seats with the trophy and wearing a Perkins jersey … The Braves signed veteran free agent infielder Brian Anderson to a major league contract and added him to the roster. He was in Triple A with Seattle and opted out of his contract.

Spencer Schwellenbach, Braves shoot for sweep of Red Sox FLM
Atlanta right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach will make his second major league start Wednesday afternoon when the Braves visit the Boston Red Sox for the back half of a two-game series.
Schwellenbach (0-1, 5.40 ERA) was promoted from Double-A Mississippi to make his major league debut on May 29 against the Washington Nationals. He allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, struck out five and walked one in a 7-2 loss. Sixty of his 88 pitches were strikes.
"I thought his stuff was real good," Braves manager Brian Snitker said postgame. "He handled himself really well. The composure, slowing the game down. I thought he was very impressive."
Travis d'Arnaud might catch Schwellenbach for the second outing in a row as Sean Murphy left Atlanta's 8-3 victory on Tuesday with a right elbow injury after being hit by a pitch in the ninth inning. X-rays were negative, and Murphy believes he will avoid going on the injury list.
"Just a big, gross lump," Murphy said. "It looks worse than it is. (The swelling) will go down quick, so I'm not worried about it."
The Braves received home runs from Ozzie Albies and Orlando Arcia during the victory at Boston. Albies hit a three-run shot against Boston starter Kutter Crawford that gave Atlanta a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning.
"Just got to make better pitches," Crawford said. "Just kind of going through a rut right now, but we're just going to keep fighting."
Atlanta starter Max Fried struck out a career-high 13 batters in seven innings on Tuesday. The Red Sox fanned 14 times in the defeat.
"He's one of the best," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Fried. "He does that every five days."
In his past three starts, Fried has 28 strikeouts in 24 innings. He walked two and allowed three earned runs in that span.
"I feel like I had a really good feel of the slider, and my curveball was probably the best it has been all year," Fried said.
Now the Red Sox will face Schwellenbach, whom the Braves selected in the second round of the 2021 draft out of the University of Nebraska. Schwellenbach, 24, won the John Olerud Award as the best two-way player in college baseball. The Braves drafted him as a pitcher, but he had Tommy John surgery before his first professional appearance.
Nick Pivetta (2-4, 4.08) is scheduled to start for Boston. The right-hander took a 5-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. He gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings while striking out nine, including eight in a row at one point to tie the franchise record.
Pivetta also took the loss when the Braves beat the Red Sox 5-0 on May 8. It was his first appearance since April 3, after which he went on the injured list with a right elbow strain. He gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings at Atlanta.
Pivetta is 7-5 with a 5.30 ERA in 20 career appearances (16 starts) vs. the Braves.
The Red Sox are 0-3 against the Braves this season.

Alex Speier @alexspeier Other Red Sox news: Tyler O'Neill has been activated and Tyler Heineman has been optioned back to Worcester. -O'Neill and Refsnyder will flop-flop in the outfield and at DH in an effort to keep both healthy and productive.
-Sox may employ a bullpen game Sunday to give extra rest to their starters, especially Kutter Crawford, rather than having him pitch on four days' rest against the White Sox on Sunday. -With Martin out, the Sox feel they can handle the 7th and 8th with Weissert and Slaten.
And Yoshida is expected to hit off the Trajekt machine today, and remains on track to start a rehab assignment this weekend (precise day unknown) 12:34 PM · Jun 5, 2024 · 5,073 Views
