Alex Verdugo slugs 2-run HR, drives in 4 runs in return to Fenway as Yankees beat Red Sox 8-1 AP
BOSTON (AP) Alex Verdugo had a two-run homer and four RBIs in his return to Fenway Park, and Luis Gil struck out six as the MLB-leading New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 8-1 on Friday night.
Verdugo spent four seasons with the Red Sox before being traded to New York in December in a rare deal between the AL East division rivals.
“To come over here, do what we did as a team and obviously the swing that I put on in the first to give us the lead, it was a big moment," Verdugo said. "It felt like a lot of relief for me, and also just a lot of anticipation for this matchup.
“It was pure adrenaline, just fired up. Wasn’t really expecting to swing at the first pitch and to put it out of the ballpark and give us the early 2-0 lead was big. I kind of let a little yell out when I rounded first, and when I hit second, I saw my dugout going crazy, so I just kind of lost it again.”
Verdugo hit the first pitch he saw from Boston right-hander Brayan Bello to straightaway center field for his ninth homer of the season, scoring Juan Soto, who reached on a double. The 28-year-old right fielder added an RBI double in the fifth inning and a run-scoring single in the ninth.
“That’s really impressive,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I’ve been there, where you go back and play, and from my experience, it’s odd, it’s hard to normalize things. He was very calm before the game. In my mind, maybe he was a little nervous. But, he came right out and delivered a punch on the first pitch and didn’t stop. Pretty impressive performance, knowing it meant a lot to him.”
Gil (9-1) worked five innings, giving up one run on four hits with four walks. The 26-year-old righty threw a season-high 104 pitches. In his last nine starts, Gil is 8-0 with a 1.14 ERA, giving up seven earned runs over 55 1/3 innings.
The Yankees (50-22) got a run in the fourth when Giancarlo Stanton led off with a single and Anthony Rizzo walked. After Gleyber Torres grounded into a double play, it appeared Bello got out of the inning on Oswalda Cabrera’s groundball to first baseman Dominic Smith. But, Bello’s error attempting to cover first allowed Stanton to score.
The Yankees added two runs in the fifth when Anthony Volpe singled to open the inning. Aaron Judge followed with a one-out walk. Verdugo’s double scored Volpe and sent Judge to third. After Giancarlo Stanton struck out, Bello’s outing was done. He was replaced by left-hander Cam Booser, who gave up a run-scoring single to Rizzo.
“We were talking about getting ahead, stay ahead,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Bello’s outing. “I don’t think that was the case. He fell behind to nine hitters and I think six or seven of them got on base. They have a good offense, but with that, we have to be more aggressive in the strike zone.”
Bello (6-4) went 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
“I think the start was going well and I got out of rhythm,” Bello said. “They were hitting the ball in the big moments and I think that was the key.”
In the ninth, Yankees No. 9 hitter Jose Trevino hit a solo home run off right-hander Chase Anderson, his seventh of the season. With two outs, Soto walked and scored on a double by Judge. Verdugo followed with a single that scored Judge.
New York relievers Tommy Kahnle, Caleb Ferguson, Victor González and Michael Tonkin combined to pitch four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Ferguson struck out all four batters he faced.
Boston’s run came in the fourth when Gil issued consecutive walks to Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida to open the inning. Devers scored on Enmanual Valdez’s double.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Yankees: Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner RHP Gerrit Cole, on the injured list all season with right elbow inflammation, made his third rehab start on Friday, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked before the game against the Red Sox if that would be Cole’s final rehab start. “We’ll see,” Boone replied.
Red Sox: RHP Chris Martin, on the injured list since May 2 as he deals with anxiety, is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. … INF/OF Romy González, on the IL since May 31 with a left hamstring strain, played first base and went 1 for 4 for Triple-A Worcester on Friday, his second rehab game. … OF Wilyer Abreu, on the IL since June 3 with a right ankle sprain, has begun taking batting practice and could begin a rehab assignment soon.
UP NEXT
The Yankees and Red Sox continue their three-game series on Saturday. LHP Carlos Rodón (9-2, 2.93 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Yankees, opposed by RHP Cooper Criswell (3-3, 4.13).

Cora wants Bello to attack strike zone after shaky start vs. Yanks 1:54 AM ADT Ian Browne

BOSTON -- This wasn’t supposed to be how it would go for Brayan Bello.
Not when he signed a six-year, $55 million contract extension three weeks before making the first Opening Day start of his career. Despite the faith the organization put in him with the contract and the Opening Day nod, the 25-year-old isn’t a finished product.
And that was again evident on Friday night when he got roughed up by the Yankees -- the team he had dazzled to the tune of a 1.45 ERA against in five previous starts.
In the first matchup between the rivals this season, the Red Sox and Bello took an 8-1 loss at Fenway Park.
After getting touched up for six hits and five runs (four earned) over 4 2/3 innings in which he walked three and struck out five, Bello’s ERA through 12 starts this season is 5.00.
Through 12 starts in 2023, he had a 3.27 ERA and was considered the ace of the staff. That distinction now belongs to Tanner Houck.
What is separating Bello from being the pitcher he was for most of last season?
“Strike throwing,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “I think that's the most important thing. It happened in the last outing. The walks put him in a bad spot. Today, it was a weird one. Stuff-wise, it was good, but we have to be more aggressive in the zone.”
Considering the events of his last start, when Bello gave up a grand slam to Gavin Sheets to snap a 1-1 tie and threw his glove down in disgust, a bounce-back outing was the righty’s clear mission.
But it wasn’t to be. Alex Verdugo, Bello’s former teammate, smashed a two-run homer to center to open the scoring in the top of the first.
"I've obviously seen him pitch a lot. I understand what pitches he throws, what he likes to throw. I've never faced him at all before,” Verdugo said. “So I'm really just trying to get out over, see something, and I got a good pitch to hit."
The run that Bello allowed in the fourth never should have happened. On a feed from first baseman Dom Smith that should have been the third out of the inning, Bello dropped the throw for an error and an unnecessary add-on to the Yankees' lead.
Instead of regrouping in the fifth, Bello gave up a leadoff single to Anthony Volpe, who then stole second and third against him. Aaron Judge drew a one-out walk and Verdugo then became an annoyance again, ripping an RBI double off the Monster.
“We weathered the storm [after Verdugo’s homer], we were right there in the game,” Cora said. “We missed a play at first, we let Volpe steal third in a big situation. I think we’ve just got to be better at throwing strikes, too. That’s the most important thing.”
Bello is searching for answers and still feels the quality of his pitches isn’t translating into results.
“I think my stuff was better than last start,” Bello said. “I feel like my sinker, my changeup and my slider were working well today.”
The issue seems to be mindset, a lack of location or a combination of both.
“My pitches all have a lot of movement so for me to try to control them that’s a challenge,” Bello said. “When I try to control those pitches, I sometimes leave them in the middle, and that’s when the battles start. So for me, I just need to be better trying to have a better location with the pitches.”
“We were talking about getting ahead, staying ahead, and I don't think that was the case,” Cora said. “He fell behind to nine hitters, and six or seven of them got on base. They have a good offense, but with that, we have to be more aggressive in the strike zone.”
Bello agreed that the aggression he used to his advantage last season has been lacking, for whatever reason.
“I need to be more aggressive,” Bello said. “I need to be attacking the hitters in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. I think that’s something I’ve been missing the past few starts.”

Injuries & Moves: Martin, Abreu rehab updates June 14th, 2024

LATEST NEWS
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Chris Martin (anxiety) Expected return: Possibly during Toronto series (June 17-19) Martin let the Red Sox know he was dealing with issues related to anxiety that have impacted his ability to perform, such as fatigue, energy and recovery. The move to the 15-day IL was made retroactive to June 2, and Martin will first be eligible to pitch for Boston again on June 17.
That date could be realistic for the righty to return, as he will make a Minor League rehab appearance for Triple-A Worcester in Buffalo on June 15. Martin has thrown multiple bullpen sessions since going on the injured list. (Last updated: June 14)
OF Wilyer Abreu (right ankle sprain) Expected return: During June 17-23 road trip Abreu has turned a corner in his recovery in recent days and could start an abbreviated Minor League rehab assignment in the coming days. That could position him to be activated during the upcoming road trip that will take the Red Sox to Toronto and Cincinnati.
"We don't know if it's one game or two [rehab] games, but we want him to move around before he gets here to play the outfield and all that stuff," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "We'll see where we are after the weekend." (Last updated: June 14)
2B Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) Expected return: TBD Grissom, who missed the first 32 games of the season with a left hamstring strain, injured his right hamstring running out a grounder to third base on June 1. An MRI exam revealed a mild strain. Grissom has shown improvement.
"Feeling better, doing baseball activities," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "I don't think he's running at full speed, but he's been able to take grounders, which is good." (Last updated: June 14)
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) Expected return: Imminent The utilityman started his Minor League rehab assignment on June 13, going 1-for-2 with one walk and one RBI as the DH for Triple-A Worcester. Gonzalez got the start at first base on June 14, and he should be activated by the Red Sox any day. He has played 17 games for Boston this season, batting .257 with no homers and six RBIs. (Last updated: June 14)
RHP Bryan Mata (right lat strain) Expected return: TBD Mata, who was in the late stages of his comeback from a right hamstring strain, suffered a right lat strain making a Minor League rehab appearance on May 23. He is ready to start back up again, as Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Mata is getting ready to report to Double-A Portland to restart his rehab assignment. He can start with a fresh 30-day clock. Once that is up, the Red Sox will be required to make a roster decision.
Mata, ranked as Boston's No. 27 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is out of options, meaning he needs to be placed on the Major League roster once he is healthy to avoid being designated for assignment. (Last updated: June 14)

Tyler Milliken ⚾️ @tylermilliken_ Red Sox are now 3-21 when they allow an unearned run. 10-21 against teams over .500. 35-35 overall.
17th time this season they’ve scored 1 or fewer runs as an offense. 1-for-10 with RISP. Yankees allowed 6 walks and 4 hits in the first 6 inning. Just have to take advantage in those spots.
Also, another rough start for Brayan Bello. 5.00 ERA through 13 starts. If the Red Sox want to go anywhere, he needs to be better.
P.S. The Alex Verdugo revenge game was the most predictable thing ever

Ian Browne @ianmbrowne Bello just dropped the feed from Smith on what would have been the third out of the inning. Instead, it's the third run of the night for the Yankees, who lead, 3-0. 9:38 PM · Jun 14, 2024 ·
Bill Koch @billkoch25 Anyone being forced to cover this should be praised for their professionalism. The Red Sox struggle to move the needle these days even when hosting the Yankees.
My sister-in-law bought Saturday night tickets on the secondary market for below face value.....and she did it this week.
The Red Sox have done incredible damage to their own marketability. It's truly astounding to see how out of touch their front office stubbornly remains.
