Chris Cotillo @chriscotillo
Sox were 1-for-11 with RISP, 11 LOB, 14 Ks. We all know that we have to cut down on the Ks. Even in last night's game where we scored 8 runs, we had 11 Ks. That said, it's typically a good sign when there are a lot of LOBs. It's mind boggling how the team struggled to split the series against the White Sox, then can turn around and win 3 out of 5 (so far) against the 2 best teams in baseball and 3 of the best starting pitchers. Go figure. I don't feel good about tonight's game, but we've already won more in these 6 games than I was expecting to win. Truthfully, I was thinking 1 out of 6. Maybe I have some reverse psychology going on here. LOL I think the Ks are a function of age. Yoshida is the only one that has hit the age of 30.

We're 16th in OPS v lefties, and 6th against righties. We wouldn't do it, but when healthy, we can put 9 lefties in the lineup.

Fun evening. Not a fan of Kelly, but that was a huge outing. No sure things, but Duran always had some pop, so he always had a chance. But Hamilton came out of nowhere. Probably the fastest guy in BB, but that doesn't count unless you can get on. I liked the trade, but more on the Kavadas side, and I thought might a close miss. Amazing job so far. Big outing by Weissert, just in case anyone forgets the other side of the Verdugo trade.
But the entire weekend came down to Jansen. A senior citizen like him calling in to go into the game in the 8th is hero ball. That was a very losable game at that point. If we do anything this year, I am going to remember Jansen stepping up.

Zack Kelly escapes bases-loaded jam as Red Sox set club record with 9 steals in 9-3 win over Yankees AP
BOSTON (AP) Boston’s Zack Kelly escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh before Connor Wong had a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning, lifting the Red Sox to a 9-3 victory over the MLB-best New York Yankees on Sunday night.
The Red Sox set a club-record with nine stolen bases, with David Hamilton getting four, to take two of three games from the Yankees. It was the most stolen bases in a major league game this season and the most allowed by the Yankees since May 19, 1915.
“Hammy kind of carried the load there,” Boston outfielder Jarren Duran said of Hamilton. “I got a couple. It just kind of shows when we can run the bases like we can, it does a lot for the team.”
Hamilton stole second in the third, second and third in the fifth and set the club record with his swipe of second in the eighth. Duran had a pair, too.
“It was fun, just an overall fun game,” Hamilton said.
Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 26th homer, a solo shot, and Jose Trevino added a solo drive for the Yankees (50-24).
“They were able to get on base and then once they were able to get on base, they were able to get into scoring position,” Judge said of Boston's base stealing. “They capitalized when they got guys in scoring position. They were able to do it all night.”
Boston starter Kutter Crawford (3-6) tied his career-high with nine strikeouts, giving up three runs, three hits and a walk in six innings.
After losing the series opener, the Red Sox gave their first consecutive sellout crowds of the season at Fenway Park lots to cheer for.
Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo left the game in the seventh after colliding with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino on a play at first and falling hard on his right arm.
Bernardino was reaching for a wide throw by Dominic Smith when the two collided and Rizzo went to the ground hard after crossing the bag safely. He immediately grabbed his wrist/hand. The club said it was a right lower arm injury.
“The initial imaging ... which is a low-grade X-Ray, was negative, but he's in some pain in that lower arm in a number of places,” New York manager Aaron Boone said. “He'll get a lot of tests (Monday) and see what we're dealing with. When he didn't get up right away, I could tell he was in some pain.”
Marcus Stroman (6-3) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings.
New York sliced it to 4-3 in the sixth when Jose Trevino homered into the Green Monster seats and Anthony Volpe scored on a wild pitch.
Judge homered into the last row of the Monster seats.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Yankees: They haven’t decided if ace Gerrit Cole’s next start will be with the Yankees or another rehab start. “I think we’re going to make it tonight or definitely tomorrow,” Boone said of a decision. Working back from an elbow injury since spring training, Cole said he was “feeling good” following his third rehab start. … Placed top prospect Jasson Domínguez on the minor league injured list. Boone said he injured his left oblique area on a check swing. … Boone also confirmed that OF prospect Everson Pereira had season-ending internal brace surgery on his throwing elbow two weeks ago.
Red Sox: Reliever Chris Martin (anxiety) threw a scoreless inning for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. The club probably will activate him Tuesday. “He’s in a good spot,” manager Alex Cora said. “Hopefully this helped him, too, to reset his body and we get the best version of him - the strike-throwing machine with quality strikes.” … INF Romy Gonzalez (strained left hamstring) went 4 for 6 with three RBIs for Worcester. “There’s a good chance he’ll join us in Toronto,” Cora said.
UP NEXT
Yankees: LHP Nestor Cortes (3-5, 3.59 ERA) is set to start the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday against second-place Baltimore. RHP Albert Suárez (3-0, 1.61) is scheduled for the Orioles.
Red Sox: RHP Nick Pivetta (3-4, 3.88) is slated to face Blue Jays LHP Yusei Kikuchi (4-5, 3.26) when the teams open a three-game series in Toronto on Monday.

Boston steal party! Sox run over Yanks in historic fashion 1:09 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- The running Red Sox? That’s something you’ve heard well … almost never. Playing their home games at the bandbox known as Fenway Park, the Red Sox have thrived on wall-banging thumpers for much of their existence.
But on Father’s Day, it became clear these aren’t your father’s Red Sox. Or your grandfather’s Red Sox.
The 2024 edition is built on youth and athleticism, and manager Alex Cora is encouraging his players to lean into that identity. And so they did on Sunday Night Baseball, setting a franchise record of nine stolen bases in a game and upending the AL East-leading Yankees, 9-3.
“Expect that from us,” Cora said after witnessing his team run a track meet in front of an electric crowd. “We’re gonna push the envelope.”
And perhaps nobody pushes it faster than rookie David Hamilton, who stole four of those nine bases. Hamilton joined Jacoby Ellsbury (who holds the franchise record with his five-steal effort on May 30, 2013) and the late Jerry Remy as the only players in club history to steal four or more bases in a game.
Jarren Duran (two steals), Ceddanne Rafaela, Dominic Smith and Bobby Dalbec accounted for the other thefts for a team that leads the American League with 69 steals.
“There's certain teams, that's their DNA and that's how they're going to play,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “Obviously, the Red Sox have a number of fast players, and that's how they play the game right now.”
At least initially, the Yankees looked poised to withstand Boston’s fast-break offense. In fact, Boone’s squad looked like they were going to come up with one of those momentum surges that the game’s most storied rivalry has been known for.
But thanks to underrated righty reliever Zack Kelly, who came on with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh and his team clinging to a one-run lead, there would be no comeback for the Yankees.
Kelly (1.88 ERA) had no margin for error and he didn’t give an inch, not even after falling behind to Gleyber Torres – the first batter he faced – 3-0. In a stirring sequence, Kelly came back with a four-seamer and a cutter for called strikes, and got Torres to swing and miss at a sweeper in the dirt.
He followed that clutch out by striking out catcher Jose Trevino (the victim of all nine Boston steals) on three pitches and getting DJ LeMahieu on a flyout to center as the Fenway crowd roared through the seventh-inning stretch.
Can you say adrenaline rush?
“As high as it’s probably ever been, honestly,” Kelly said of his adrenaline during that sequence. “But those are the situations you dream about. Those are the ones you want to come into. Bases loaded, you kind of show what you’re made of. Fortunately it went my way.”
If the fans were screaming at maximum decibel levels, Duran might have matched them while cheering on Kelly.
“I almost lost my voice in left field,” Duran said.
After Kelly’s Houdini act, the Sox put on their track shoes again, stealing three more bases to go into the club’s history book. The previous record of eight took place on Sept 29, 1940, in the second game of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics.
“I had no idea,” Duran said. “I didn't know about the record until they put it up on the big screen. I was like, ‘Oh wow, we set a record.’ But records are meant to be broken. So I'm sure ours will be broken eventually. So it doesn't really mean much, but we're gonna keep doing our thing.”
Six of the nine steals came in the first five innings, as Boston broke out to a 4-1 lead.
“I was telling [hitting coach] Pete [Fatse] when Trevino goes deep that there’s nothing better than a home run in this game,” Cora said. “We did all that stuff [on the bases] and it was a 4-2 game. Their big boys are coming. [Alex] Verdugo puts the ball in play. [Giancarlo] Stanton does the same thing. We don’t make a play and it’s bases loaded [next inning] with no outs, and Zack was amazing.”
On Sunday, that thing, as Duran put it, was electrifying to watch.
“That was fun,” Hamilton said. “Probably the loudest baseball atmosphere I've been a part of, and it was a good experience.”
Not to mention a historic one.

Red Sox ‘gotta get a race going’ as Jarren Duran, ‘Hammy’ help set record

BOSTON — The Red Sox set a franchise single-game record with nine steals in a 9-3 win over the Yankees on Sunday. Boston’s previous record of eight steals happened Sept. 29, 1940 against the then-Philadelphia Athletics.
“Hammy kind of carried the load there but glad I got a couple,” leadoff hitter Jarren Duran said. “It just kind of shows that when we can run the bases like we can, it does a lot for the team and puts us really in a good spot. So I’m really proud of the team for being able to make that accomplishment.”
David “Hammy” Hamilton stole four bases. He joins Jacoby Ellsbury and Jerry Remy as the only Red Sox players ever to steal four or more bases in a game. Ellsbury holds the franchise single-game record with five steals May 30, 2013.
“You can see in their dugout just trying to contain us,” manager Alex Cora said. “We just kept going and we’re not going to stop.”
Duran had two steals. Dom Smith, Ceddanne Rafaela and Bobby Dalbec each had one steal.
“I didn’t know about the record until they put it up on the big screen,” Duran said. “I was like, ‘Oh, wow. We set a record.’ But hey, man. Records are meant to be broken. So I’m sure ours will be broken eventually. It doesn’t really mean much but we’re just going to keep doing our thing.”
Hamilton leads the Red Sox with 18 steals. Duran has 17 and he’s on pace for 23 triples, which would set a franchise single-season record. Who’s faster?
“I don’t know. He’s pretty fast,” Hamilton said. “We’ve gotta get a race going sometime. Maybe this offseason. We’ll see.”
The Red Sox took two of three games against the first-place Yankees who own MLB’s best record. They also won two of three games on this six-game homestand against the Phillies, who are tied with the Orioles for MLB’s second best record.
“Probably the loudest baseball atmosphere I’ve been a part of and it was a good experience,” Hamilton said about Sunday’s game.
The Red Sox scored 17 runs the past two games despite zero home runs.
“I think the identity is showing up now,” Cora said. “Just a bunch of athletes putting good at-bats.”
Hitters on the Red Sox’ active roster entered Sunday just 6-for-42 (.143 batting average) with two extra-base hits, four walks and nine strikeouts against Yankees starter Marcus Stroman. But Boston used its speed to get to Stroman who lasted 5 innings and allowed four runs, seven hits and four walks while striking out three.
The Red Sox stole six bases against catcher Jose Trevino during Stroman’s 5 innings. Hamilton manufactured runs in the third and fourth innings using his speed.
The speedster walked to begin the third inning. He stole second and advanced to third base with no outs on Rob Refsnyder’s single. Hamilton scored when Rafael Devers grounded into a double play, putting Boston ahead 3-1.
Hamilton singled to begin the fourth inning, then stole both second and third. He scored on Devers’ RBI sac fly to center field.
“Every time he gets a single it’s like, ‘Ah, double. Maybe a triple,’” Duran said. “Like tonight. He stole second, stole third. So it’s so awesome to watch him steal.”
Duran said the Red Sox’ speed puts opposing pitchers in a tough spot. Boston is fifth in the majors in steals with 69.
“Because maybe they have to slide step and they’re not comfortable slide stepping. And they have to pick over. Maybe they’re not good at picking over,” Duran said. “Just little things like that kind of make them uncomfortable knowing we’re going to steal bases on them. So hopefully that gets them out of the groove.”
Hamilton owns both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester’s single-season stolen base records. He swiped 70 bases in 119 games for Portland in 2022, then 57 bases in 103 games for Worcester last year.
Cora is using elite speed at the top of the lineup, batting Duran first and Hamilton second.
“It’s awesome. Jarren’s a great hitter,” Hamilton said. “It’s fun hitting behind him because I can see how they’re pitching him and it kind of gives me a little detail to how they might pitch me. It’s fun hitting behind him. He’s a great player.”

Tyler Milliken ⚾️ @tylermilliken_ Best win of the season for the Red Sox and it’s not close.
Heading into these two series against the Phillies and Yankees, it felt like they could send your season off the tracks.
Instead, you showed up and took both series in an electric way. Especially with the injuries you’re dealing with.
This should set the tone for the rest of 2024. Abreu, Martin, and Casas right around the corner.

Mac Cerullo @maccerullo You can’t say enough about what the Red Sox have done this week. Had the two best teams in baseball come in to Fenway, along with hordes of their fans, and beat them both for back-to-back series victories.

Matt McCarthy @mattmccarthy985 A very good week for the Red Sox. Taking 4 out of 6 from the Yankees and Phillies is no joke.
The next 4 series come against teams hovering around .500. Let’s see if they can break the “one step forward, one step back” trend they’ve had for 2+ years. I’ve seen this story before. 11:50 PM · Jun 16, 2024 · 1,330 Views

With the buzz created by Red Sox and Yankees at Fenway this weekend, consider the rivalry renewed By Peter Abraham Globe Staff,Updated June 17, 2024, 12:18 a.m.
The best rivalry in sports turned stale for a few years after the Red Sox beat the Yankees in the American League Wild Card Game in 2021.
The Yankees were the far better team in ‘22 and they both missed the postseason by wide margins last season as the Orioles became the trendy team in the American League East.
Hatred was replaced by cooperation when the sides made their first major trade in years in December, the Sox sending tardy-but-talented Alex Verdugo to the Bronx for three pitching prospects.
Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman praised each other for striking a deal that helped both teams.
It was nauseating.
The buzz finally came back this weekend at Fenway Park as the Sox took two of three from the Yankees, taking the series with a 9-3 victory on Sunday night before a sellout crowd of 36,718.
It was the largest crowd of the season. And a vocal one.
The Sox embarrassed the Yankees by stealing a franchise-record nine bases, four by David Hamilton. The old record of eight had last happened in 1940 against Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics.
“Yankees suck,” the masses chanted on several occasions as the Sox ran wild. Finally, fans of the visiting team were drowned out at Fenway.
“Early on, it felt like Father’s Day,” Sox manager Alex Cora said. “People went to brunch and had their mimosas and they were just watching. But when we started going, it was great.”
It was so much like the old times that all three games took more than three hours.
More of this, please. If the Celtics finish their championship run on Monday, it’ll be nearly three months before the Patriots open their season. The Sox can make it an interesting summer.
This last week raised hopes. At 37-35, the Sox are two games over .500 for the first time since May 22 and have won five of seven. They were 4-2 in a homestand against the Phillies and Yankees.
“The best team in the NL and the best team in the AL. The young guys can feed off this,” said Rob Refsnyder, whose leadership has kept the clubhouse together. “They’re playing so well. It’s been fun watching this team grow.
“It’s such a different dynamic with our offense when Jarren [Duran] and Hamilton are on base. We’ll hit for more power when [Triston] Casas comes back. But with speed you can always find ways to score.”
Sox starter Kutter Crawford gave up a skyscraping home run by Aaron Judge in the first inning then struck him out twice swinging. Crawford retired 12 of 13 at one point before the Yankees scored twice in the sixth.
By then, his teammates had built a lead that the bullpen was able to hold.
“Not sure I’ve heard Fenway like that before,” Crawford said. “Being in the dugout and experiencing that, it was a good feeling. This was a good week for us. It’s something we can build on and get the fans excited about.”
After an 8-1 loss on Friday, the Sox scored 17 runs in the next two games. They used power on Saturday, connecting for six doubles. Then it was their speed on Sunday with the nine steals, 13 singles, and a triple.
With Ceddanne Rafaela batting ninth, Duran first, and Hamilton second, the Sox have three burners in a row. They combined for seven steals as Yankees catcher Jose Trevino looked helpless.
“We’re going to push the envelope. We have a bunch of athletes,” Cora said.
When is the last time you heard a Red Sox manager say that?
Cora was part of the Sox-Yankees rivalry as a player. He knows what it’s like to play on “Sunday Night Baseball,” leave Fenway after midnight, and fly to another city to start a road trip.
That’s the challenge the Sox face on Monday against the Blue Jays, who beat the Guardians in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.
For Cora, Monday could be even more telling than the weekend.
“You’ve got to keep the energy,” he said. “The next day is important. We cannot just show up in Toronto and expect to win a ballgame. We did a good job against the Phillies; we did a good job against the Yankees and now we have Toronto.”
Asking for more? That’s how a manager who likes his team talks.

Red Sox top of the order made a bit of noise but no one plated
and I hate to admit it, but like Judge
have no issue with Soto.
Gives alot to the game, interacts with fans, plays hard, not a hot dog.
Hate the laundry not the player I agree on Judge and Soto. As a Red Sox fan, I can't stand them on the field. As a baseball fan and a fan of humanity, I have to give them both a tip of the cap.

And he pitched his way out of it Bases loaded, no outs, and a 3-0 count to the batter. I was sure it was going to be game over for the Red Sox. Amazing that he got out of that mess. That's the kind of thing and emotion I love to see.
