Hot-hitting Red Sox begin series vs. rival Yankees FLM
After a series victory over the National League-leading Philadelphia Phillies, the Boston Red Sox will look to continue the momentum against the American League-leading New York Yankees as a three-game set begins Friday night.
The archrivals will be meeting for the first time this season. The series opener in Boston will be the 70th game for the Red Sox and the 72nd for the Yankees.
The Red Sox have won three of their past four games after winning the final two games of the three-game series against the Phillies. Tyler O'Neill hit a three-run home run while Jarren Duran and Enmanuel Valdez hit two doubles apiece to power Boston to a 9-3 win on Thursday.
"We've got a good team," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "We're gonna lose some games and we're gonna win some games. I know everybody thought the must-win was Sunday in Chicago (against the White Sox) because they have the worst record in baseball. We don't see it that way. We show up every day and work hard."
The Red Sox had 14 hits in the finale against Philadelphia, including five straight during a four-run second inning against Phillies ace Aaron Nola. Duran, whose two-run double capped the frame, produced his seventh game with multiple extra-base hits this season.
"We were finding barrels and hitting the ball hard," O'Neill said. "It was awesome to see."
Brayan Bello (6-3, 4.78 ERA) is scheduled to start for Boston on Friday. He took a loss Saturday against the White Sox after allowing five runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Bello is 2-2 with a 1.45 ERA in five career starts against New York.
The Yankees' four-game winning streak was snapped with a 4-3, walk-off loss to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. New York also saw its eight-game road win streak come to an end.
Kansas City was up 2-0 until Anthony Rizzo homered, Anthony Volpe drove in a run with a groundout and Juan Soto hit an RBI single to put New York in front in a three-run eighth.
"All losses hurt, especially when you're up and you're leading, but then again, (the Royals) are also professionals," New York left-hander Nestor Cortes said after his Thursday start.
The Red Sox will face Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (8-1, 2.04 ERA), who had won seven straight starts before taking a no-decision Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 5 2/3 innings during his latest outing.
"In the small time I've seen him, he lives for those moments," Yankees star Aaron Judge said. "I look forward to more."
The Yankees are 11-2 in Gil's starts this season. He had thrown at least six innings and given up no more than one run in each of his previous seven outings, a feat that no Yankees pitcher had accomplished.
With Gil returning from Tommy John surgery, his innings -- currently at 75 -- are being monitored.
"We're not putting any kind of a limit on him, but there may be a natural one that happens," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "But I don't necessarily think that's our expectation."
Gil has made only one career start against the Red Sox. He allowed three hits and four walks in 4 2/3 shutout innings on Aug. 17, 2021.

Injuries & Moves: Abreu takes BP, closer to rehab assignment June 13th, 2024
MLB.com
LATEST NEWS
• All Red Sox transactions 10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
OF Wilyer Abreu (right ankle sprain) Expected return: Later in June Considering Abreu's importance to the Red Sox at the plate and in the field, it was a significant step for the left-handed hitter to be in a regular hitting group for batting practice at Fenway Park prior to the game on June 13 against the Phillies.
There's no word yet on when Abreu will go on a Minor League rehab assignment, but it could be fairly soon. He has been on the 10-day injured list since June 3 with a right ankle sprain.
"He's moving well," manager Alex Cora said. "Nothing yet game-wise, but he’s doing better each day." (Last updated: June 13)
INF/OF Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) Expected return: June Gonzalez started his Minor League rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester on June 13, serving as the DH. He is slated to play in the field the following day and should be activated soon. In 35 at-bats this season, Gonzalez is hitting .257 with six RBIs. (Last updated: June 13)
RHP Chris Martin (anxiety) Expected return: Later in June Martin let the Red Sox know he was dealing with issues related to anxiety that have impacted his ability to perform, such as fatigue, energy and recovery. The move to the 15-day IL was made retroactive to June 2, and Martin will first be eligible to pitch for Boston again on June 17.
He threw his second bullpen session since going on the injured list on June 13 and could be activated around or near the date he is first eligible.
"He feels good [physically]," manager Alex Cora said. "Obviously, the other part is the other part. That’s Dr. [Richard Ginsburg] and the group dealing with that, but you see him in the clubhouse more involved, more upbeat. I try to respect his situation [and give him space], but it looks and feels like he's doing a lot better.” (Last updated: June 13)
1B Triston Casas (torn cartilage in left rib cage) Expected return: No earlier than July 2 Casas, who suffered torn cartilage in his left rib cage when he fouled off a pitch on April 20, has made significant progress and is swinging the bat lightly off a tee, but without impacting the baseball. Once Casas is ready to take full-intensity swings and batting practice, it will signify he's reasonably close to a return to action.
Casas has been throwing and taking ground balls. He is hopeful he can return on July 2, when the Red Sox open a series in Miami against the Marlins. Casas was born and raised in South Florida and still lives there in the offseason.
"We have to be patient. Everything is trending in the right direction. I really don't know when he's going to start swinging, but just keep doing the things in the gym and taking ground balls," manager Alex Cora said previously. "Hopefully that step is soon, but that's going to take a while. It's not easy [to know] because it’s just about feel. We’ll see." (Last updated: June 13)

Red Sox seemingly take a huge step with series win over Phillies, but the Yankees are up next By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated June 13, 2024, 11:59 p.m.
In their season-long struggle to prove they are not a middle-of-the-pack team, the Red Sox finally laid down something that might serve as a building block as they prepare (finally) for their first meeting with the Yankees this weekend.
One day after their come-from-behind 8-6 victory over the Phillies, the Sox built upon their most impressive win of the year with another. Behind a solid performance from ace Tanner Houck and an explosive one from the offense, the Sox delivered a 9-3 shellacking to longtime Philadelphia standout Aaron Nola in the rubber match of their three-game set with the Phillies at Fenway Park.
“Philly is no joke. They do everything well,” said Tyler O’Neill (2 for 5 with a three-run homer). “We took it to them. . . . It was a really fun series and it was a really good team for us to beat, for sure.”
The series win against the team with the National League’s best record marked the first this year for the Sox against a team with a record of .500 or better. They’d been 0-7-1 in those meetings, the lone split coming against the Mariners in the four-game series to start the season.
“It was huge,” leadoff hitter Jarren Duran (2 for 4 with two doubles and a walk) said. “We showed a lot of heart all series. We got knocked down knocked down [in the first game] and then we came back and played two great games. . . . We’ve just got to keep riding the wave and keep staying on track.”
More precisely, the team would be better served by switching tracks. After all, at 35-34, the Red Sox remain in a very familiar place. They’ve gone to sleep within one game of .500 for 21 consecutive days.
But, for the first time this season, the series win against the Phillies forged some evidence that the Sox can indeed play to the level of one of the powerhouses in the league. At least some members of the team had identified the back-to-back series against the Phillies and Yankees — the teams with the best records in baseball — as a useful midseason barometer.
“The Phillies are the best in the NL and the Yankees are best in the AL. It’d be foolish not to see how you stack up against the best teams,” said outfielder Rob Refsnyder. “It’s hard not to look at how you stack up against the best in baseball.”
Still, while manager Alex Cora found encouragement in the way his team played — particularly the depth of offensive contributions on a night where every starter got a hit, and seven reached base at least twice — he downplayed the significance of any single series victory, no matter the opponent.
More significant than a stretch of a few games, he suggested, is the fact that a young Sox team is determined to improve and compete hard on a nightly basis.
“We have a good team,” said Cora. “Sometimes it’s going to be good. Sometimes it’s going to be great. Sometimes we’re going to struggle. That’s who we are. We have accepted that and we’re going to show up every day and try to kick your [butt]. That’s the bottom line. Sometimes we will. Sometimes they’ll kick our [butt].”
Clearly, the Sox took some satisfaction in having been the deliverer rather than recipient of posterior kicks. Their tall (literally) order is now to try to do the same against the Yankees, who will bring a best-in-baseball 49-22 (.690) record to Fenway on Friday.
A compelling case can be made that Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have been the two best hitters in baseball this season. The superstars are hitting a combined .310/.430/.641 — the stuff of Ortiz and Ramirez, Gehrig and Ruth.
“It’s two of the top five generational hitters in the same lineup,” said Refsnyder. “It’s just incredible to watch.”
The lineup has been one of the top handful in baseball, thanks to its two anchors and steady contributions from ex-Sox Alex Verdugo (who seems destined to find his way into the eye of the spotlight in his weekend return to Fenway), Anthony Volpe, and Giancarlo Stanton.
Yet somehow, despite the season-long absence of ace Gerrit Cole (on a rehab assignment while working back from right elbow inflammation), the pitching has been even better. New York has a 2.90 team ERA, best in baseball. All three starters they’ll roll out at Fenway this weekend (Luis Gil, 2.04; Carlos Rodón, 2.93; Marcus Stroman, 2.82) have sub-3.00 ERAs.
“They are who they are because they can pitch,” said Cora.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, have been who they’ve been — a team constantly dancing around .500 — because of consistently solid pitching that has alternately been supported or betrayed by their offense. And now, the question is whether the Sox can build upon a strong series and lay the foundation for something more sustained — not who they are, but if they can become something more.
The division is already an unrealistic aspiration this year given the sizable gap between the Sox the Yankees (13 games) and Orioles (10½ games). Is there evidence of progress, though, to suggest that the team can hold its own to stay in the wild-card hunt? Was the Phillies series evidence of such progress?
“I might say yes now, and we lose two out of three against the Yankees, and we’re back to who we are,” said Cora. “I think we’re doing a good job staying in the moment, helping [players] to develop, and I still believe there’s going to be one of those stretches [of] like 10 [wins] out of 12 [games], 13 out of 15. That’s when we’re going to be really in the hunt. That wild card, it is what it is, right? But those are the rules of the tournament. We play by them and we’re still in the mix.”
A strong series against the Yankees would go a long way toward suggesting they can stay there.

RED SOX NOTEBOOK Red Sox manager Alex Cora appreciates relationship with Brad Stevens and the Celtics By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 13, 2024, 8:30 p.m.
Manager Alex Cora and Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens have a close relationship that has only evolved with time.
Cora recalls back in 2020, during his one-year suspension for his involvement in the Astros’ cheating scandal, when Stevens, then head coach of the Celtics, would text Cora, asking about his 2018 Red Sox team and how they overcame obstacles to become World Series champions.
“He’s been great to me,” said Cora about Stevens, whose Celtics are one win away from winning the NBA championship, leading the Mavericks , 3-0, with Game 4 Friday in Dallas. “We have great conversations. [Head coach] Joe [Mazzulla] has reached out to me a few times. We actually did a Zoom call with the coaching staff and it’s been fun, just kind of how the team has evolved into who they are. They have two great superstars [Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown], young ones, that they’re really good at what they do. They have learned over the years how to become partners and just overcome adversity.”
Cora attends Celtics games when he gets the chance. He took his twin sons, Xander and Isander, to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. One was wearing a Tatum jersey. The other, Brown.
“The Garden is electric,” added Cora. “It’s electric. It’s fun. I took the boys over there and they loved it. The team is almost there. They’re almost there and they’re very similar to us in ‘18. I do believe that. With everything that they went through with a head coach and part of it right and Joe last year, being the head coach but not having his staff, I think that was an obstacle for him. But he got the right people. They got the right coach. Brad is one of the best out there.” Hendriks still shooting for August
Reliever/closer Liam Hendriks won’t ask the medical staff where he is in his progression. Hendriks, who underwent Tommy John surgery last August, prefers the Sox keep his timeline internal. Hendriks would rather just keep working.
Hendriks’s personal target to return is August and that has remained unchanged since he signed a two-year deal prior to spring training.
“I mean, I feel like I’m kind of a lot further along,” said Hendriks. “I feel like I can throw a bullpen right now and be good to go. But there’s a process to all these things and it’s been proven time and time again that there’s a reason for the process. So, I got to abide by that a little bit but I’m feeling great right now. I feel like August is attainable. I feel like August is easily attainable.”
Hendriks is throwing out to 60 feet three times a week. The Sox are keeping track of his velocity, making sure that there isn’t such a huge separation from one day to the next. The righthander is up to 88 miles per hour on certain days, and can maintain it for the most part.
“I’m going out there and getting better every day,” said Hendriks. “I’m doing whatever they told me to do and a little bit more.” Abreu takes batting practice
Wilyer Abreu (ankle sprain) is still progressing quickly, taking batting practice on the field at Fenway … Triston Casas (rib cage strain) continues to swing lightly, but hasn’t progressed beyond that. Casas is still doing his own unique routine, which includes standing in on pitchers’ bullpens and other different visualization methods. “It’s like keeping his mind sharp, his eyes, everything that he needs to do to continue to be engaged, is awesome,” said Cora. “He understands what he needs to do to be successful at this level. It’s not weird, it’s kind of like, hopefully the other guys are watching and they start doing the same thing.” … Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) hit in the DH spot and went 1 for 2 with an RBI, walk, and strikeout for Triple A Worcester Thursday. He will play first base Friday. The Red Sox will begin a three-game set against the Yankees at Fenway Friday. This weekend’s starters are Brayan Bello vs. Luis Gil, Cooper Criswell vs. Carlos Rodon, and Kutter Crawford vs. Marcus Stroman. The Yankees have the best record in baseball at 49-22 following a series victory over the Royals.

I always find McWilliams articles to be enjoyable reads. It would be nice to have Hendriks available for our September playoff run. I hadn't counted on him at all. Getting Abreu and Casas back would be significant. I don't know if their hot streaks will continue, but if Hamilton and Valdez keep performing like they are, and you add back Abreu & Casas, this is going to become a very deep lineup. We'll have Smith backing up Casas instead of Dalbec, and Abreu, O'Neill, Yoshida and Refsnyder rotating through the OF/DH.
