Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 7:15pm EDT Written by Jordy
The rival Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are prepared to go blow-for-blow in Saturday’s clash of the ensuing three-game series. After getting shut down offensively by the Houston Astros, the Red Sox are hoping to explode on the road against a Yankees team that split even in a series with the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Despite winning Friday's opener, they’ll still have their hands full with opposing teams averaging only 3.50 runs per game at Yankee Stadium. Jameson Taillon is expected to start at pitcher for New York opposite of Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez.
Red Sox looking to make a statement The Red Sox don’t just want to beat the Yankees.
They want to humiliate them. Don’t think for one second the Yankees wouldn’t be aiming to do the same if they had the rising monster roster. The Red Sox are one of the best offensive teams in baseball, and they have a pitching rotation that’s standing its ground.
Granted, that last statement will get tested with Eduardo Rodriguez slated to start at pitcher on Saturday. He’s throwing a 5.64 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP on the season. When he’s on the mound, there’s enough wood cracking to build the world’s largest bonfire. Even the lackluster Yankees’ batting lineup should be brimming with hope ahead of this matchup.
They’ll have every opportunity to eat at the plate—at least in the early going.
But the Red Sox’s bullpen has been tough. They’re currently sitting at a 3.72 ERA, which is more than enough juice to hit the brakes on any would-be offensive explosion.
Speaking of offensive explosions, Boston’s batting lineup will have the luxury of running into Jameson Taillon. Like Rodriguez, the Yankees’ right-handed pitcher has struggled. This Red Sox team is the last opponent you want to see when riding the struggle-bus. They are pounding pitchers at the plate with a .257 batting average and .755 OPS. Once they get going, the Yankees might not be able to keep up.
Judge is a one-man army Aaron Judge sent another home run sailing over the wall in the opener against the Red Sox on Friday night. The only other run scored for the Yankees came from Gio Urshela cashing in on a fielding error in the 5-2 loss to the Red Sox.
What else is new for an offense that’s clearly stuck in mud?
It would be a tough pill to swallow if they can’t get anything going when staring down Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez in their home building. But it also needs to be said that what you see is what you get from the Yankees. Judge’s bat is the only one that scares anyone right now with him leading the team in home runs, RBIs and batting average. He’s basically a one-man batting army out there.
And yet, the reality of the team is the fact they’re only averaging 3.74 runs per game this season with little to no knockout power at the plate. They were a top-10 team in isolated power last season, and now, they’re the seventh-worst in the league.
The mute button has officially been pressed on the Bombers.
Jameson Taillon could certainly help if he can keep the Red Sox from running up the scoreboard early. No one is asking him to pitch a gem, but the team also can’t afford for him to get cracked by a Red Sox lineup riding a tidal wave of confidence right now. Bad things have consistently happened when the 29-year-old righty steps on the mound. He’s throwing a 5.10 ERA on top of a disappointing 1-4 record.

Why Red Sox pitching coach Dave Bush isn’t concerned about Eduardo Rodriguez E-Rod looks to bounce back after May struggles
By Steve Hewitt | stephen.hewitt@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald June 5, 2021 at 5:00 a.m.
Dave Bush isn’t worried about Eduardo Rodriguez.
After the worst month of his career in May, Rodriguez was probably thrilled to see the calendar turn to June. The Red Sox left-hander posted a 7.52 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over six starts in May, but there are signs that things will turn around for him when he makes his first start in June tonight against the Yankees.
Why isn’t Bush concerned? After missing 2020 due to myocarditis, Rodriguez had a strong spring and April before his May struggles. That’s encouraging for Bush, who’s confident that Rodriguez’s issues aren’t bigger than they could be.
“It happens,” the Red Sox pitching coach said. “Four, five, six starts in a row would stand out, but he also had a really good April. Maybe I’d be more concerned if this is how the season started with him being out last year and not sure how his body was going to respond. If he had started out this way, I’d be more concerned but he had a really good first month of the year, so I know he can throw well. The velo’s been ticking up lately, his stuff is still really good. It grades out well in all the ways we grade pitch data. His command has been hit or miss. There’s some days where he’s commanded well, some days he hasn’t. But all in all, most of the signs are pointing in the right direction. It’s just not happening for him on the field right now.
“I’ve been encouraging him. … He’s a fighter. He’s going to figure out how to get through this. He’s going to get back to being the guy that he has been in the past and we know he’s going to be in the future.”
Rodriguez lost his fourth consecutive start for the first time in his career on Monday in Houston, where he lasted just 4 2/3 innings and gave up six runs. But manager Alex Cora came away encouraged. His fastball velocity was up, his cutter was much better, and Cora said that if he continued to pitch like he did on Monday, the results would come.
Bush agreed, because the analytics back it up.
“I’ve dug through all of his stuff, I’ve put together all the pitch data and we have lots of different ways to evaluate the way a guy is throwing the ball and most of his look good,” Bush said. “Truthfully. Most of his look a lot better than his results have been. I know that’s not much of a consolation to Eduardo right now because I know he wants to have the results on the field, but as we’re looking at what he’s doing and trying to evaluate him and try to get better, most of the signs are still pointing in the right direction.
“So I think there is something really solid to build on, I do like the way he threw the ball (Monday). He’s frustrated by the hits and runs given up, but we’re trying to look past that right now and make sure that he’s doing all the right work on the side and also trusting that it’s going to turn around for him.”
Bush said Rodriguez is frustrated, but he’s been motivated to improve in between his starts. Rodriguez had similar struggles to begin 2019, when he had a 5.04 ERA at the end of May (it’s at 5.64 for the season now) before coming through in a breakout year, and he’s trusting the process that things will eventually turn around.
“He’s not down,” Bush said. “He’s annoyed, he’s frustrated, he wants to do better. He’s a competitor, just like all these guys are. He knows he’s better than this. He knows that this month is not reflective of who he is as a pitcher. So he has the right attitude about it. He’s going to come back out tomorrow, get back in the bullpen. …
“He’ll have the ball again on Saturday in New York and be ready to go. But I’m not worried about his confidence. He knows he’s a good pitcher and he’ll be back to that soon.”

The message Rafael Devers' home run sent Current Time 0:11 / Duration 1:19
UP NEXT: Colon Cam
By Rob Bradford 2 hours ago
It appeared as though Rafael Devers was never going to hit a fastball again. And it sure looked like the Red Sox' days of winning in Yankee Stadium were a thing of the past.
With one huge swing -- and we do mean huge -- all parties involved exhaled.
Rafael Devers' first-inning 112.4 mph, 429-foot home run into the night at Yankee Stadium meant more than most. That was a reality that was evident even before Matt Barnes struck out the side in the ninth, sealing the Sox' 5-2 win.
Why was this one so notable? For starters, it came against a fastball. That might seem like a innocuous piece of the equation, but considering the path Devers was going down it was anything but.
After watching the lefty hitter flail away at four days of heaters in Houston, this was a trend that had become of the utmost concern considering Devers' importance. You could tell yourself this was a hitter who hit .308 against fastballs just two seasons ago, or siphon off the memory of that homer against Aroldis Chapman's 104 mph heater in this very same park. But, still, doubts had crept in.
Those doubts left the building the minute the baseball left Devers' bat.
“Obviously, they’re throwing me a lot of fastballs like you mentioned and I’m not mad at it," Devers said. "I just make my adjustments and obviously I was able to hit that one pretty deep but that’s really what it’s all about is making the adjustments and trying to do what I can with it.”
The home run did something more than just offer optimism regarding one of the Red Sox' most important players. It also allowed for the suggestion that Alex Cora's team could actually win in a place it had lost 15 of its last 16 visits.
The dominance the Yankees held over the Yankees since Steve Pearce caught that throw from Eduardo Nunez on Oct. 9, 2018 was put in the rearview mirror bit by bit over the course of the 2-hour, 49-minute game.
Nathan Eovaldi continued to offer the image of a front-end starter, allowing one earned run over six innings, striking out seven without walking a batter.
Hirokazu Sawamura came through with his signature outing as a Red Sox, throwing two dominant innings that included five of his six outs coming via strikeouts.
And then there was Barnes. Three batters, three punchouts. That would be 44 strikeouts in 25 innings. This after compiling an ERA of just more than 25.00 in his previous four Yankee Stadium appearances.
As has been the case more times than not, the Red Sox stiff-armed all of those doubts that had been festering throughout the week to send yet another message.
This time, fortunately for the Red Sox, it was Devers who delivered.

Yankees purchased the contract of 1B Chris Gittens from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Gittens compiled a robust .283/.486/.585 triple-slash line with four homers across 74 plate appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. The 27-year-old first baseman will provide the Yankees some additional pop at the cold corner. Hard Hittin' Chris Gittens could be a real thing by the end of the weekend, especially if he comes up with a pivotal hit or two against the Red Sox. Source: New York Yankees on Twitter

I laughed my ass off when he hit it, sounded like a cannon and laughed harder listening to the boos no idea if the catcher gets signs from bench or not, but yeah King should of made him fish. And Devers in a perfect world where we had a good lead off hitter should be batting higher as well.

I'm not sure how someone with his velocity and pitches got signed so easily. One of the things I like about Blooms signings is that we have options years on Perez, Richards, and Sawamura, and obviously a remaining arb year on Renfroe. A lot of times, one year contracts favor the players, since they can just walk away if they are good. But we get all four back at a cheap price next year.
