Boston Red Sox vs. Kansas City Royals Friday, June 18, 2021 at 8:10pm EDT Written by Chris Kubala
It’s a battle of American League teams on the diamond in the Show-Me State. The Boston Red Sox are on the road as they open up a three-game set with the sputtering Kansas City Royals Friday night. Boston rallied to down Atlanta Wednesday 10-8 on the road, sweeping a two-game interleague set from the Braves. Kansas City was swept in a three-game set at home by the Tigers, losing the finale 6-5 Wednesday afternoon. Boston took five of six meetings in the season series back in 2019 as the teams didn’t meet last season due to geographical scheduling due to COVID-19. That included taking two of three at home in the most recent series August 5-7, 2019.
Boston Red Sox Looking to Stay Hot Boston won their third straight and fifth in the last seven games as they rallied to sweep the Braves on the road in a two-game interleague set. The Red Sox entered Thursday second in the AL East, one game behind the Rays for the top spot in the division. Boston got three hits from Xander Bogaerts (two runs, RBI) while J.D. Martinez (two runs) and Hunter Renfroe (run, two RBI) each added a pair. Christian Arroyo had the big hit with a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning, his fourth homer of the year, to give Boston a 10-7 lead. Garrett Richards didn’t factor in the decision as he threw four innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Yacksel Rios (1-0) got the final out of the sixth to earn the win while Adam Ottavino earned his first save despite allowing one run on two hits with no walks and a strikeout in one inning of work.
Nick Pivetta takes the mound to make his 14th start of the season for the Red Sox in this contest. He comes in 6-2 with a 4.28 ERA, a 1.313 WHIP, 33 walks and 80 strikeouts over 69.1 innings of work this season. Pivetta took the loss in his last start, which came at home against the Blue Jays Saturday. He threw five innings, allowing six runs on six hits, including four homers, with two walks and six strikeouts in a game the Red Sox lost 7-2. In his last three starts, Pivetta is 0-2 with a 5.74 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, seven walks and 21 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work. Pivetta, in his 108th career major league appearance and his 87th start, pitches against the Royals for the first time here. That makes this his first career outing at Kauffman Stadium as well.
Kansas City Royals Reeling Kansas City was swept at home by Detroit to enter this one losers of six straight and 11 of their last 12 contests. The Royals entered Thursday third in the AL Central, 12.5 games behind the White Sox for the division lead. Kansas City got two hits each from Whit Merrifield (run, RBI), Hanser Alberto (run), Carlos Santana (run, RBI) and Salvador Perez (run, two RBI) in the loss. Perez (his 17th of the year) and Adalberto Mondesi (his third) homered in a losing effort for the Royals. Brady Singer didn’t factor in the decision as he threw three innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Greg Holland (2-2) took the loss on the mound as he allowed three runs on two hits with a walk and no strikeouts over one-third of an inning.
The Royals are expected to turn to rookie Jackson Kowar, who would make his third start of the season in this contest. He comes in 0-2 with a 36.00 ERA, a 6.50 WHIP, five walks and one strikeout over two innings of work at the big-league level. Kowar took the loss in his last start, which came on the road against the A’s Saturday. He threw 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout in an 11-2 Royals defeat. In his third career major league start, Kowar pitches against the Red Sox for the first time. This also marks his first career start at Kauffman Stadium after his first two outings came on the road. Kowar was 5-0 with a 0.85 ERA, a 0.884 WHIP, 10 walks and 41 strikeouts over 31.2 innings in six starts for Triple-A Omaha of the East Division of the American Association prior to his recall.
The top trends for this contest are:
Red Sox are 8-0 in their last 8 Friday games Red Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 road games Red Sox are 6-0 in Pivetta's last 6 starts with 5 days of rest
Royals are 1-11 in their last 12 games on grass Royals are 0-7 in their last 7 when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game Royals are 0-5 in their last 5 home games

red sox notebook The good and ugly of Red Sox revealed during 17-game stretch By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated June 17, 2021, 8:17 p.m.
The Red Sox survived a grueling 17-game stretch, finishing with a 10-7 record. After their May 30 contest was postponed and rescheduled for June 7, the Sox lost that Monday offday. It forced the club into that unexpected 17 games in as many days.
The Sox displayed the good and the ugly during that stretch . They lost three of four to the Astros on the road . Then responded with a three-game sweep of the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. They returned home to Fenway and dropped two of three to the Astros and then, somehow, split with the Blue Jays despite being outscored 31-14 during that four-game series. Then they swept the Braves in a two-game set.
The Sox entered Thursday just one game back of the Rays in the American League East. Here’s a recap of the 17-game stretch and what’s at play heading into the Sox’ series with the Royals.
You might have been wondering when the Sox’ starting pitching might take a hit. It seemed as if the rotation was overachieving heading into the month of June, living on the highwire. Prior to that 17-game stretch, Sox starters ranked 15th in the league with a 4.07 ERA. The rotation yielded just 21 homers, which ranked second behind the Mets. Teams had a 28.9 percent hard-hit rate against the Red Sox, tied for the fourth-lowest in baseball. In the following 17 games, however, Sox starters posted a 6.32 ERA, the sixth-worst in the game. Opponents had a .317 batting average (second-worst), and after surrendering just 21 homers in their first 52 games, the Sox allowed 16 in their next 17 contests, which tied for the fourth-most in that span.
The Sox relinquished leads in their last two games against the Braves but ultimately won both by a 10-8 margin.
“It was an ugly win,” manager Alex Cora said after the first win Tuesday. “But it’s a big-league win. We didn’t give up. We kept putting together good at-bats.”
More on the bats later, but first, let’s delve deeper into one specific starter.
The Red Sox have yet to figure out the Eduardo Rodriguez issue. They have dismissed — at least publicly — the notion his down season so far was as a result of contracting COVID-19 and myocarditis, forcing him to miss all of 2020. Cora and the Sox seemed as if they had an answer for his struggles, detailing that his cutter played like a hanging slider. His changeup had too much on it and could be likened to a two-seam fastball. The Sox had him dial back his changeup to roughly 83-84 miles per hour to give the hitters a different look/speed. Yet that hasn’t stopped teams from feasting against Rodriguez, who now has a 6.21 ERA this year.
In his last seven outings, Rodriguez has an 8.55 ERA, allowing 32 runs in 33 ⅔ innings pitched. After Tuesday’s outing against the Braves when Rodriguez allowed four runs in just four innings, Cora was out of answers as to why his starter still was struggling. Related: Speier: Chris Sale is balancing the itch to pitch with the imperative to remain patient
“Right now I don’t know,” Cora said. " I think stuff-wise, he’s good. The changeup was good. Velocity was good, elevated fast was good. He wasn’t able to finish them off.”
Teams have a 7.7 percent barrel percentage against Rodriguez, which was the highest it’s been since 2017 when he registered that same number. For context, the league average was 6.5 percent as of Thursday and Rodriguez still has a 6.4 percent barrel rate for his career. He did induce 17 swings and misses Tuesday, which was the most he’s had this year. Perhaps, if there’s anything the Sox can hang their hat on, it’s that.
Offense
The offense continues to stay at the top of the league. Before Thursday, they ranked third in batting average (.257) and were tied for third in OPS (.755). The heart of the Red Sox’ order (Nos. 2-6) have a .285 batting average and an .841 OPS, both of which ranked second in baseball behind just the Astros. Moving forward
The Red Sox will face the Royals for a three-game set beginning Friday. It’s a team that will be without Andrew Benintendi, who went to the IL with a rib fracture earlier this week. This could be an opportunity for the Red Sox to rack up some wins. The Royals (30-37) are third in the AL Central and have lost nine of their last 10 games. Nick Pivetta will get the start Friday, followed by Martín Pérez and Nate Eovaldi.
The Royals still haven’t determined a starter for Friday, but will go with lefthander Kris Bubic, who has a 4.01 ERA in 42 ⅔ innings this year, and Brad Keller on Sunday. Keller has a 6.14 ERA in 14 starts this year.

Jorge Soler, Royals try to get back on track vs. Red Sox
Jorge Soler has taken 26 walks in 2021, but five of them have come in the last three games. The Kansas City Royals need him to continue his patience.
The Royals have lost six straight and 11 of their last 12 and will try to get things turned around as they host the Boston Red Sox on Friday night for the opener of a three-game series.
The Royals have not announced a starter, but if they keep the rotation on schedule, they'll send RHP Jackson Kowar (0-2, 36.00 ERA) to the mound. Kowar needs to find the form that made him one of the Royals' top prospects.
The Red Sox will counter with Nick Pivetta (6-2, 4.28 ERA). Pivetta has struggled recently, with a 6.08 ERA in his last five starts. Pivetta is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA on the road this season.
Soler might be ready to get his rough season going, at least according to his manager.
"That's part of his game," Mike Matheny said after Soler drew two walks for the second straight game Wednesday.
Soler is hitting just .185, and his OPS is just .625. But that's as high as it's been since mid-May, largely due to an improved on-base percentage.
"That's a precursor to seeing him really get rolling," Matheny said. "It started with a three-hit game (Monday, when he also drew a walk). That was a big step in the right direction. He had better pitch recognition. That's what makes him so dangerous. Hopefully he starts seeing the ball even better, but that's a good indicator when he's taking walks."
Matheny was not ready to commit to Kowar, who was warming up in the bullpen in the ninth, in the postgame media session Wednesday. "We don't have a starter for Friday," he said. "We just wanted to get (Kowar) on the mound. But he will be in that conversation."
If Kowar does get the nod, he'll need to do better than he has in his first two starts. He has allowed four earned runs in each. He was marginally better in his second start, at Oakland on Saturday, when he lasted 1 1/3 innings, as opposed to two-thirds of an inning in his debut.
"If I'm not commanding the bottom of the zone, you're not going to chase any changeups below the bottom of the zone," Kowar said of his struggles. "So I had to bring my changeup more up into the zone, and that's when you can get hurt, and that's exactly what happened."
Pivetta, who has never faced the Royals, started the season 6-0. But he has lost his last two decisions. In his last start, a 7-2 loss against Toronto on Saturday, he allowed six earned runs on six hits in five innings.
Pivetta's start against the Blue Jays capped an eight-game stretch in which Red Sox starters had an 8.36 ERA, giving up 60 hits and 35 earned runs over 37 2/3 innings.
"It's one week," Pivetta said. "At the end of the day, we've held together really, really strong and put some really good starts in. There's no room for panic here. There's no room for making a big deal out of it. It's baseball. It's how it goes. It's how you adjust to it and how you move forward."

Red Sox at Royals Series Preview
The Red Sox will face the reeling Royals in Kansas City this weekend with a chance to build on a two-game sweep of Atlanta this past week. By Phil Neuffer@philneuffer Jun 18, 2021, 12:01pm EDT
SB Nation Blog
Royals Review The opponent in one sentence
After a surprisingly solid start to the season, the Kansas City Royals have fallen back toward the middle of the pack in the American League Central. Record
30-37 Head-to-head record
This is the first series between the Red Sox and Royals this season. The Red Sox went 5-1 against the Royals in 2019 but did not play them in 2020. Trend
Down. The Royals have have lost 11 of their last 12 games and gone 4-11 in June and that’s after a pretty miserable May, when they went 11-17. Pitching Matchups
6/18: Nick Pivetta vs. Jackson Kowar, 8:10 p.m. EST
Nick Pivetta caught a case of the home run bug in his last start. After doing a solid job of keeping the ball in the yard for his first 12 starts (five home runs in 64 1⁄3 innings), Pivetta allowed four long balls across five innings (including three in the span of four batters in the fifth inning) in a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on June 12. Pivetta’s usual weakness has been with free passes, as he has a walk rate of 11.2 percent, but he has usually avoided too much trouble with decent strikeout stuff.
A top 10 prospect in the Royals’ system, according to FanGraphs, Kowar is a 24-year-old right-hander who has pitched a total of two MLB innings, all of them coming this year. Despite the low inning total, this will actually be his third start of the campaign, but the others went terribly, as he has allowed a total of eight earned runs on eight hits and five walks overall this season. Kowar features a fastball that sits at about 96 miles per hour as well as a curveball and a changeup.
6/19: Martín Pérez vs. Kris Bubic, 4:10 p.m. EST
For a minute, it looked like Martín Pérez had a claim to the title of best Red Sox starter in 2021, but back-to-back duds on the mound have derailed such discussions. After getting lit up for six earned runs over two innings against the Houston Astros on on June 8, Pérez couldn’t record more than four outs before exiting against the Blue Jays last time out, allowing five earned runs and three home runs before handing the ball to Alex Cora. Pérez’s ERA has ballooned to 4.52 thanks to those two starts and his expected ERA looks even worse (5.37). Hopefully he can rekindle the magic he displayed earlier this month when he twirled 7 2⁄3 shutout innings against the Astros on June 3.
Like Kowar, Kris Bubic is another young starter hoping to establish himself as a fixture for the Royals’ rotation in the long term. However, unlike Kowar, Bubic has a bit more experience under his belt at the MLB level. The 23-year-old southpaw logged 50 innings across 10 starts in 2020 and has accumulated 42 2⁄3 innings across 10 games this year, including six starts. Despite that extra experience, Bubic, who throws a fastball, a curveball and a changeup, still has some work to do, as he has been worth -0.3 fWAR this season despite an acceptable 4.01 ERA. His last two outings have really soured things, as he surrendered a combined 11 earn runs over 8 2⁄3 total innings against the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland A’s.
6/20: Nathan Eovaldi vs. Brad Keller, 2:10 p.m. EST
Nathan Eovaldi will close out the series for the Red Sox. He’ll be out to build on Monday’s impressive start against Toronto, when he shut out the Blue Jays over the course of 6 2⁄3 innings. In that contest, he logged his 11th start without giving up a home run this season, pushing his MLB-leading mark in home runs allowed per nine innings down to 0.34. Avoiding the long ball is a rarity in the current game, but Eovaldi has made it a habit, helping to support his stellar mark in FIP (2.62).
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the Royals will trot out another one of their young starters on Sunday, as Brad Keller takes the mound for his 15th start of the campaign. Despite already being in his fourth MLB season, Keller is just 25 years old. However, youth has not served him well this season, as the right-hander enters the weekend with a 6.14 ERA, while ranking in the the bottom 10th percentile in MLB in a number of categories, including xwOBA, xERA and xSLG. Keller has relied most heavily on his sinker this season, but he also features a fastball, a slider and a changeup. Old Friends
This would have been the first time the Red Sox faced Andrew Benintendi in a Royals jersey since they traded him to Kansas City this past offseason, but Benintendi is currently on the 10-day injured list with a fractured rib. The rest of the MLB roster doesn’t feature any former Red Sox contributors, although the Royals do have former members of the organization like Mike Shawaryn and Gabe Speier in their minor league system.
Salvador Perez is still one of the best hitting catchers in baseball and is currently the frontrunner to represent the AL in the All-Star Game.
First baseman/DH Carlos Santana was put on this planet to draw walks. He has a 15.4 percent walk rate this season and an on-base percentage of .365, helping to boost his wRC+ to 115 despite a .244 batting average.
Jorge Soler has struggled this season, but the right fielder/DH is still only two years removed from a 48-home run season.
Whit Merrifield provides speed on the base paths and solid defense at second base (and the outfield from time to time), but his usually solid batting average has taken a slight dip this season, although he has still displayed pretty good plate discipline.
Shortstop Adalberto Mondesi is a burner when he gets on base, stealing 99 bases over the previous three seasons. Mondesi has only played in eight games this season, so his current wRC+ (197) is more a symptom of small sample fun than a dramatic improvement at the plate.
As a former first round pick, Hunter Dozier is a recognizable name on the roster due to his prospect pedigree, but those days are long in the past, especially as the 29-year-old has a 53 wRC+ this season.
Michael A. Taylor’s first season in Kansas City has gone similarly to his last few with the Washington Nationals, as the outfielder has a 74 wRC+ right now after posting marks in the 70s in each of the last three seasons.
Jarrod Dyson returned to the Royals this season to try to rekindle the glory days of 2014 and 2015. So far, the 36-year-old outfielder has been a nice surprise, slashing .280/.345/.400 while remaining a good baserunner. Bullpen Snapshot
Flamethrower Josh Staumont is the nominal closer for the Royals and he has the stuff to back it up, boasting 91st percentile fastball velocity and an 82nd percentile curveball spin rate.
Meanwhile, right-hander Scott Barlow (1.85 ERA, 34 innings) and left-hander Jake Brentz (1.99 ERA, 31 2⁄3 innings) have eaten up innings and performed nicely.
The Royals also feature right-handers Greg Holland (4.32 ERA, 25 innings) and Kyle Zimmer (2.19 ERA, 24 2⁄3 innings) fairly frequently.
Take a look at the entire shirt collection from our friends over at BreakingT, including the latest one pictured above. Injuries
As I mentioned, Benintendi is currently on the shelf as is left-handed starting pitcher Danny Duffy, who was in the midst of a very solid campaign before he went on the 10-day injured list in May with a strained forearm flexor. Three other pitchers (Daniel Tillo, Ronald Bolaños and Jesse Hahn) are also out with injuries. Weather Forecast
This should be a pretty good weekend for baseball, albeit a hot one. Current forecasts call for dry skies with varying cloud cover in Kansas City all weekend, with temperature highs potentially reaching triple digits and lows sitting in the 70s.

Have been very luck during my career in the Canadian Navy that I got to sail into the port or general area or have had training and have commuted to some great stadiums and in Boston's case was there as a kid and adult AL East- other than Tampa Bay, all of them, even old Yankee stadium which had more atmosphere....I love Camden Yards.
AL Cental- been to all but Minny and KC. KC is on my bucket list. Pale Hose home is a chunk of cement. Comerica and The Jake is Cleveland are awesome. ( great fans)
AL West- Have not been to Angel Stadium,Oakland Texas or Houston. Safeco is beautiful as is the city of Seattle.

NL East-Was at the Philly park and was petrified the whole time. Have not been to any others.
NL Central. Wrigley was incredible. Bleacher seats. Boo'd Bonds. Have not been anywhere else but want to go to Pittsburgh.
NL West- Only one....San Fran and it and the people and the city are wonderful. Want to go to Dodger Stadium. The rest....meh. I'd like to hit all 30 at some point, One of my regrets is that I've been to Minny & TO several times without hitting the stadiums. Seattle once also. Think I've been to Mtl, Boston, Philly (the horrible Vet), tickets for PT but a bridge fell down, Cubs, Cincy, Oakland, NY, NY. So I've got some work to do. But, people from The Bronx have an attitude, rightly or (probably) wrongly, that we can visit other people's slums without issues. So visiting visiting the war zones that some of these cities have become is part of the fun. Was at Wrigley once for an end-of-summer game against the Mets. It figured to be an important game, but both wound up under .500. But to their credit, the place was packed and it was rocking. You'd have thought they were battling for 1st instead of battling for draft picks. And I want St. Louis. It is the 9th most dangerous city in the entire planet, but I never remember them not having a huge crowd.

Need to win two. No way around it. Winning only one is a loss.

Need to win two. No way around it. Winning only one is a loss. Well. I would add. I will place more stress on this for this series. I don't expect Perez to get past the first on Saturday. So for now, lets just hope Pivetta can keep the walks down. The Ball in the park. And go Jobu.
