Bradley sparks 8-run rally, Blue Jays beat Red Sox 9-3 AP
BOSTON (AP) Jackie Bradley Jr. doubled and scored to key an eight-run inning against his former team and the Toronto Blue Jays rolled to a 9-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
George Springer had two hits and drove in three runs in his return to the lineup at designated hitter. The Blue Jays (66-55) notched their fifth win in six outings to keep pace with the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL wild-card standings.
Ross Stripling (6-3) followed up his flirtation with a perfect game last week with another efficient night, yielding one run off six hits and striking out six over six innings. He said he's enjoying being someone the team is counting late in the year.
''I've had some good years but I don't think I've ever been a guy that the team has really relied on and expected big things from in a playoff push,'' Stripling said. ''So this is fun to be on the bump every fifth day when every win really matters.''
Interim manager John Schneider said the team is riding the wave of its starting pitching right now.
''They've been dealing, it starts with that,'' he said. ''I think it allows the offense to do what it's capable of doing.''
The Red Sox (60-63) have lost four of their last five.
Boston starter Josh Winckowski (5-7) lasted only 2 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, six hits and walking two. He's given up 12 runs over 7 2/3 innings in his last two starts.
It rained throughout the afternoon in Boston, and lingering storms in the area delayed the game's start time by an hour.
It didn't quiet the bats of the Blue Jays, who entered the day leading the AL with a .262 team batting average.
Kike Hernandez's RBI single gave the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the second inning
Things fell apart quickly for Boston after that.
Making his first appearance at Fenway Park as a visiting player, Bradley doubled hard off the left field wall to open the third. Boston left fielder Tommy Pham was hurt on the play after his leaping attempt to make a catch resulted in him crashing into the wall and exiting with back spasms.
Winckowski got back-to-back ground outs, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tied the game with an RBI double.
Alejandro Kirk walked and Teoscar Hernandez doubled to make it 2-1. Bo Bichette singled to load the bases and Winckowski walked Matt Chapman before being pulled in favor of reliever Austin Davis.
Cavan Biggio kept the rally going with an RBI single. Bradley Jr. then got aboard again via a walk. Davis looked like he was going to get out of the inning when Springer lifted a short fly ball to right field. But Rob Refsnyder whiffed on his attempt at a sliding catch and the bases emptied on Springer's triple to make it 8-1.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Blue Jays: Left-hander Tim Mayza (right shoulder dislocation) was reinstated from 15-day IL.
Red Sox: SS Xander Bogaerts was replaced in the seventh inning after experiencing mid-back spasms. . Following Pham's injury, Refsnyder entered the game at right field and Alex Verdugo moved to left. Pham is day to day. . RHP Nathan Eovaldi was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Manager Alex Cora said he expects him to return before the season ends. .. 1B Eric Hosmer was placed on the 10-day IL with lower back inflammation. . Cora said second baseman Trevor story would begin a rehab assignment with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs Wednesday.
WELCOME BACK JBJ
Bradley received a warm reception during a video tribute highlighting the outfielder's time in Boston, which spanned eight-plus seasons over two stints.
Bradley was the MVP of the 2018 AL Championship Series and helped catapult the Red Sox to a World Series win that season. He tipped his cap to the crowd in his first appearance at Fenway Park as a visiting player.
Bradley agreed to a $24 million, two-year contract with Milwaukee in March 2021 and played one season for the Brewers. He was traded to Boston in December and played a second stint with the Red Sox. But early season struggles led to him being released by Boston earlier this month. The Blue Jays signed him on Aug. 9.
UP NEXT:
Blue Jays: RHP Jose Berrios (9-5, 5.39 ERA) has faced Boston twice this season, allowing just three earned runs over 13 innings with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Red Sox: RHP Brayan Bello (0-3, 8.47) will make his fourth start of the season.

Red Sox injuries: Trevor Story to begin rehab assignment at Double-A on Wednesday; Tanner Houck back to throwing and may return this season

BOSTON -- For a change, the Red Sox had some relatively good news to share on two injured contributors Tuesday afternoon.
Second baseman Trevor Story, on the injured list since mid-July with a hand/wrist injury, will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Portland on Wednesday. Closer Tanner Houck, who has been shut down for most of the month with lower back inflammation, is playing catch again and has a chance to return this season. If the Red Sox make a playoff push in the last few weeks, it appears Story and Houck will be part of it.
Story will play in a game Wednesday for the first time since July 12, when he suffered a hand contusion and stress fracture in his wrist when he was hit by a pitch against the Rays. Story took batting practice, ran the bases and played catch on the field at Fenway Park on Tuesday. He will play second base for the Sea Dogs when he arrives in Portland.
“I don’t know how many at-bats or how many games he will need,” Cora said. “We’ll be patient and he’ll let us know whenever he’s ready.”
Story might return by the time the Red Sox wrap up their six-game homestand Sunday afternoon. Christian Arroyo, who has been red-hot at the plate since returning from the injured list and taking over on a full-time basis at second, will get at-bats at first base once Story returns, according to Cora. The Red Sox are short at that position with Eric Hosmer hitting the injured list.
Houck is further along as he begins his progression but the fact he’s back to throwing is a good sign. Less than a week ago, Cora said Houck had a disc issue in his back and that his progress over a few days would determine if he would pitch again in 2022. Houck has responded well to treatment.
“He’s got the green light to keep going,” Cora said. “We just have to build him up and see how it goes. The hope is for him to get back at one point this season.”
Cora wouldn’t put a timetable on a potential return for the closer.
“He feels strong. The treatment has been good,” Cora said. “It’s just the start now. He feels good enough to keep going.”
Bello could return Wednesday
Righty Brayan Bello, who has been on the injured list since Aug. 4 with a left groin strain, is a candidate to be activated to start Wednesday’s game against Toronto. He last pitched Friday in a rehab start at Triple-A Worcester and would pitch on regular rest. The Red Sox could piggyback Bello and lefty Rich Hill, who has not pitched since Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
Cora didn’t have an update on lefty James Paxton, who is still shut down from throwing after suffering a lat strain in his rehab start Thursday in Fort Myers.

BOSTON -- A game that started 61 minutes late due to rain ended in familiar fashion for the Red Sox, who once again got blown out by an American League East opponent Tuesday night.
The Blue Jays, who authored a 28-5 trouncing of the Sox just a month ago, pounded them again, this time by the score of 9-3. Starter Josh Winckowski bent but didn’t break through his first two innings before the floodgates opened and Toronto scored eight runs in the third to open up an early 8-1 lead.
The loss dropped the Red Sox to 3-11 against Toronto this season, 16-33 against the AL East and 60-63 overall. Astonishingly, they have been outscored by the Blue Jays by 46 runs (91-45) in 14 games.
The Red Sox drew first blood against righty Ross Stripling, as Christian Arroyo led off the second with a double then scored on a Kiké Hernández RBI single. Winckowski pitched two scoreless frames to start despite giving up extra-base hits in each.
Making his return to Fenway Park as a visitor, Jackie Bradley Jr. started Toronto’s third-inning fun with a double before Winckowski got back-to-back groundouts. Then came the onslaught. The next eight batters reached and seven scored as Winckowski gave up three hits and issued two walks before giving way to lefty Austin Davis. A three-run triple from George Springer off Davis broke things open and put the Jays up 8-1. Toronto would add a ninth run in the seventh when Bradley, who was 2-for-3 with two runs in his return, hit an RBI single off Hirokazu Sawamura.
Boston’s second run scored on a Cavan Biggio double play ball in the bottom of the seventh. Rafael Devers made it 9-3 with an RBI single off David Phelps in the ninth.
Winckowski was tagged for six earned runs on six hits in 2⅔ innings and his ERA rose to 5.83. The rookie now has a 7.71 ERA in his last eight starts dating to July 7 (37⅓ innings). Davis’ ERA rose to 5.33. It was at 1.46 on June 12. He has allowed 27 earned runs in his last 28 appearances (8.68 ERA).
Bogaerts, Pham leave game
Two Red Sox starters-- shortstop Xander Bogaerts and left fielder Tommy Pham -- left the game with back spasms.
Pham, who dealt with back issues over the weekend, left Tuesday’s game in the top of the third after slamming into the Green Monster on Bradley’s leadoff double. The Red Sox announced that he is day-to-day.
Bogaerts was replaced defensively in the top of the seventh, with Hernández shifting from center field to shortstop.
Bello will get nod Wednesday
Rookie right-hander Brayan Bello (0-3, 8.47 ERA) will come off the injured list and start Wednesday’s game for the Red Sox, according to manager Alex Cora. Righty José Berríos (9-5, 5.39 ERA) will pitch for Toronto.
It will be his first big league appearance since Aug. 4 and his first start in the majors since July 24, when he allowed five runs in four innings against the Toronto.
First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Sox fall back in WC race: 'We have to keep going' Boston drops series opener vs. Toronto, falling to 3-11 against Blue Jays in 2022 2:36 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- Could the Red Sox still be in the thick of the postseason race if they had found a way to be more competitive against the Blue Jays this season?
It was a reasonable thing to wonder on Tuesday night, as Toronto kicked off its third visit to Fenway Park this season by again battering Boston, this time by a final score of 9-3.
The Sox are now 3-11 against the Blue Jays this season and 57-52 against all other opponents. The Jays are 66-55 overall, but a much less impressive 55-52 against all opponents besides Boston.
The aggregate score of the 14 head-to-head games -- admittedly skewed by that 28-5 Jays romp on July 22 -- is 91-45 in favor of Toronto.
“They’re putting good innings against us, big innings,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “It’s quick numbers whenever they score. They aren’t striking out too much against us. We had some OK games against them. But most of the time, they’ve been hitting us the whole season.”
In other words, the Red Sox can’t be sad that they have just five more games left against Toronto this season.
However, Cora’s team can’t be worried much about who the opponent is these days. They need to start stacking up wins -- and a lot of them -- for their postseason chances to move from remote to realistic.
With 39 games left, the Red Sox are seven games behind the Mariners and Blue Jays for the third American League Wild Card spot. Boston trails Tampa Bay by 7 1/2.
The issue on Tuesday was one really tough top of the third inning, when Toronto struck for eight runs against starter Josh Winckowski and reliever Austin Davis.
Winckowski is far from the first Boston starter who couldn’t stop the bleeding this season against the Jays.
“They're just really deep,” said Winckowski. “If you take a hitter off or whatnot, they're going to make you pay for it. And then obviously the middle -- two through whatever, four or five -- is up there in the league, one of the best in the league. So just one through nine, they're really good.”
Perhaps the most frustrating part of that game-turning top of the third is that Winckowski was just one strike away from getting out of the inning unharmed, with Boston leading 1-0.
But Lourdes Gurriel Jr. smashed Winckowski’s 1-2 slider for an RBI double and things unraveled swiftly from there.
“I think I kind of left it middle. And then it wasn’t a conscious thought, but maybe I started nibbling a little bit,” Winckowski said. “Walked a couple of guys in there and then fell behind to Teoscar [Hernández], and then obviously he put the ball hard in play. I think that's something I've struggled with a little bit up here, kind of not being able to slow down the snowball. It's obviously something to work on.”
This was supposed to be Nathan Eovaldi’s start. But the veteran was scratched for the second straight turn in the rotation and was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
That created another chance for Winckowski, who was optioned to Triple-A Worcester following his last start, when he was shelled for six runs on seven hits in an 8-2 loss in Pittsburgh on Thursday.
“It’s extremely frustrating,” said Winckowski. “Every chance you get up here is a huge opportunity and not taking advantage of them obviously never feels good.”
You know it wasn’t a good night when Cora had to call on backup catcher Reese McGuire to pitch the top of the ninth. McGuire did surprisingly well, getting a 1-2-3 inning while throwing just seven pitches (six strikes). He topped out at 72.3 mph.
The defeat dropped Boston to 16-33 in the division. Of the 39 games the Red Sox have left, 30 of them are against teams they are trying to catch in the Wild Card standings.
Making the path more challenging is that injuries continue to besiege Boston on a near nightly basis. Tommy Pham and Xander Bogaerts both exited Tuesday's game with back issues and won’t play Wednesday.
“We have to keep going. There’s no excuses,” said Cora. “There are a lot of teams out there playing hurt and they’re playing good baseball, so it really doesn’t matter, to be honest with you. We have to do a good job this week and this weekend to gain ground. It doesn't look too promising, of course. But we just have to play good baseball. That’s it.”

Injuries & Moves: Bogaerts, Pham out Wednesday (back spasms) 2:41 AM ADT
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
Aug. 23: SS Xander Bogaerts won't play Wednesday (mid back spasms) Injuries continue to mount for the Red Sox. The latest? Veteran leader Bogaerts exited Tuesday's 9-3 loss to Toronto in the top of the seventh inning with mid back spasms. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he will stay away from his shortstop for Wednesday's game. Bogaerts leads the Red Sox with 117 games played this season.
Aug. 23: OF Tommy Pham day to day (lower back spasms) Tuesday marked the second time in Pham's last three starts that he left mid-game with a back issue. This time, Pham banged into the Monster while trying to make a catch on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s double that led off Toronto's eight-run top of the third. Pham grimaced after the impact from the wall. Cora said that he will stay away from Pham on Wednesday night. The Red Sox say the outfielder is day to day.
"It’s frustrating because I was feeling so good today. It might have been the best I’ve felt in about two weeks," said Pham. "It’s just tightness. It’s getting the tightness out. I don’t know, I probably have a little strain in there somewhere. Right now, it’s end of August, everyone is probably dealing with something. It’s just the nature of the game. Got to kind of 'G' it out.”
Aug. 23: RHP Nathan Eovaldi placed on 15-day IL When Eovaldi was scratched from his Aug. 18 start in Pittsburgh due to a sore trap muscle, the plan was for the right-hander to pitch the first game of the upcoming homestand on Aug. 23 against the Blue Jays. With Eovaldi not progressing, the Red Sox placed him on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 19, with right shoulder inflammation.
Aug. 23: Red Sox 'hopeful' RHP Tanner Houck will pitch again in '22 Houck received good news in his latest check-in with a spine specialist, and the Red Sox are now hopeful the closer will pitch again this season. The righty went on the injured list on Aug. 9 (retroactive to Aug. 6). Houck has made 28 of his 32 appearances out of the bullpen this season, going 5-4 with a 3.15 ERA and eight saves.
"He threw on flat ground today," said Cora. "So now he's got the green light to keep going. So we just have to build him up, see how it goes, and the hope is for him to get back at one point this season."
Aug. 23: 2B Trevor Story set for rehab assignment Boston's second baseman has turned a corner in his recovery from a hairline fracture in his right hand, and he has been given the green light to start a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Wednesday. Story injured his hand on July 12 at Tropicana Field when he was hit by a pitch he swung at. Initially, it was diagnosed as a bone bruise. A couple of weeks later, Story had a follow-up exam that revealed the hairline fracture.
"I don't know how many at-bats or how many games he’ll need, but we'll be patient and he’ll let us know whenever he’s ready," said Cora.
Aug. 23: 1B Eric Hosmer placed on 10-day IL Hosmer, who did not play in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa., was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 21, with low back inflammation.
"He saw the doctor yesterday," said manager Alex Cora. "The hope is for him to get back as soon as possible. We had some talks with people from Kansas City and San Diego. For him to come out of that game, that was a big red flag. So we’ll stay away from him and give him treatment, do whatever we can to get him back. But it doesn't feel like it's something that’s going to take too long. But obviously, how he reacts to treatment, obviously getting some rest, it will benefit him."
Aug. 23: 1B/OF Franchy Cordero, RHP Josh Winckowski recalled from Triple-A Worcester Cordero was added as the 27th man for the Little League Classic on Aug. 21, and hit a game-tying pinch-hit homer against the Orioles in the eighth inning. Cordero, who is batting .222 with five homers and 25 RBIs over 73 games, was recalled from Worcester, along with Winckowski, who got the nod for the Aug. 23 series opener against the Blue Jays.
