RED SOX NOTEBOOK Despite a vacancy at first base, the Red Sox aren’t ready to throw Triston Casas into the fire just yet By Alex Speier Globe Staff,Updated August 23, 2022, 7:20 p.m.
First baseman Eric Hosmer landed on the injured list on Tuesday because of lower back inflammation. In his absence, the Red Sox summoned Franchy Cordero back to their roster and inserted him into the starting lineup against the Blue Jays.
The choice of Cordero was straightforward, yet still came with a question: Had the Sox considered calling up Triston Casas, the No. 2 prospect in the system, from Triple A to fill in and make his major league debut? Manager Alex Cora was blunt in describing the extent of organizational dialogue about giving Casas his first big league look, at a time when there’s a vacancy at his position.
“From my end, none,” said Cora. “It hasn’t been brought up to me.”
In 62 games this year with Triple A Worcester, Casas is hitting .258/.367/.458 with nine homers. He missed two months from mid-May through mid-July with a high ankle sprain, but after some initial timing struggles, Casas has been crushing the ball over the last few weeks with a .316/.429/.553 line and 12 extra-base hits in his last 21 games.
Given the amount of time Casas missed this year with injury and last year while taking part in the Olympics, Cora suggested the Sox want to give him more time to develop before he becomes a consideration for a call-up.
“He hasn’t played this year. He didn’t play last year. That’s the way I see it. He’s still developing. That’s my opinion,” said Cora. “He needs to get his reps, keep getting his reps, and keep getting better. He was off for [two] months. So I think that’s part of the equation. We haven’t talked about that recently.”
Other considerations are also in play. The team hopes Hosmer will be ready to return when eligible on August 31. Further, with Trevor Story starting a rehab assignment on Wednesday with Double A Portland, the Sox also plan to get Christian Arroyo — their hottest hitter — opportunities at first base. Cordero was on a dominant run in Triple A that carried into his one-game call-up on Sunday in Williamsport, when he hit a pinch-hit homer against the Orioles.
As for Casas, the Sox will be able to add two players to the roster — one position player and one pitcher — in September, but Cora wouldn’t commit to the young slugger when rosters expand.
“We’re still competing,” said Cora. “If he’s the guy that should be here to help us win ballgames he’ll be the guy. But right now the way I see it this is the best route we can go and he keeps developing as a player down there and keep getting his repetitions and we’ll see where it takes us.” Relief for Houck
Tanner Houck, who’s been on the injured list since Aug. 9 with what has now been diagnosed as a disk issue in his lower back, was cleared to resume throwing on flat ground in recent days. Houck, who was reexamined Monday morning, said that he was told he’d need neither a painkilling injection nor surgery to resume baseball activities.
“Things are on an upward trend. Hopefully they continue that way,” said Houck, who described himself as reacclimating to throwing without pain. “I’ve only been playing catch for a few days now, but with no pain. So that’s obviously a huge step in the right direction for me.”
Houck said he’s working with a goal of pitching again this year.
“I have high hopes for this team, helping this team reach the playoffs,” said Houck. “If I can come back and help contribute in any way, I’d love to do it.” Storytime in Portland
While Story had been taking batting practice off a high-velocity machine in the batting cage last week, Tuesday marked a different milestone in his rehab from a broken bone near his right wrist. For the first time since his July 13 injury, Story took batting practice on the field. He’ll start a rehab assignment with Double A Portland on Wednesday. “Can’t wait. It’s been a long stay [on the injured list]. I think it’s the longest one I’ve been on,” Story said of his six-week absence from the lineup. “But I’m on the way back, so happy about that.” ... Hosmer had been managing his back injury, but when he had to leave Saturday’s game in the fifth inning, it became clear that the first baseman needed time to recover. “It got to a point where we’re kind of working backwards a little bit,” said Hosmer (hitting .225/.311/.300 since joining the Sox). “The best thing is to stop right now and try and get it back to strength and then hopefully we’re back and help this team for a late push as soon as we can.” … Nate Eovaldi (5-3, 4.15 ERA in 18 starts) landed on the injured list with soreness in the area of his right trapezius muscle. Cora said that an exam on Monday revealed that the righthander is not dealing with a structural issue, and said that he does expect the 32-year-old to pitch again this year. … With Eovaldi on the injured list, the Sox called up Josh Winckowski to start on Tuesday against the Blue Jays. The team has not announced a starter for Wednesday, but Cora allowed that righthander Brayan Bello is a consideration for the start. (The Sox prefer righties against the righty-leaning Blue Jays, thus making a Rich Hill start unlikely.) Kutter Crawford will pitch on Thursday, and Michael Wacha will start Friday against the Rays ... The annual two-day WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon started on Tuesday, with more than $1 million raised. “It means a lot to all of us. You don’t have to be a part of the Red Sox to make it feel special,” said Cora. “The next two days are always great for all of us. All we ask is for people to contribute, to help out, and just to be part of something very special here in this area.” ... Tommy Pham left Tuesday’s game in the top of the third inning after crashing into the left field scoreboard in pursuit of a Jackie Bradley Jr. line drive double. He departed with what the team described as spasms in his lower back, with his status characterized as day-to-day ... Xander Bogaerts left the game prior to the top of the seventh inning due to spasms in his mid-back.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 5h Reese McGuire lined out. The Red Sox lose to the Blue Jays, 9-3. The Red Sox are 60-63. In the Wild Card Era, there has been one team (the 2009 Twins) that made the playoffs after a 60-63 start or worse...but those Twins only had to chase down one team (the Tigers) that collapsed

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 5h Cora on Winckowski: “The movement of his pitches wasn’t great. We get two outs, two strikes against Gurriel… We just didn’t stop it. … We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to throw strikes.”
“We were one pitch away, and all of a sudden, you look up and they’ve scored eight. That’s happened a lot to us.”
Pham and Bogaerts will both be out tomorrow. Sox will have to make move for a position player. Bello will be activated to start
Winckowski on the inability to close out the 3rd: "It wasn’t a conscious thought, but maybe started nibbling a little bit ... I think that's something I've struggled with a little bit up here, kind of not being able to slow down the snowball. It's obviously something to work on."

Red Sox notebook: Triston Casas promotion could happen this year, but Franchy Cordero gets the call this time Sox are considering a promotion for Casas later this year
By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: August 23, 2022 at 7:17 p.m. | UPDATED: August 23, 2022 at 8:11 p.m.
The Red Sox are giving Franchy Cordero another opportunity at first base.
Eric Hosmer, the veteran acquired via the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline, was placed on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation on Tuesday, opening a spot on the roster for a first baseman.
Cordero was the choice to replace him on the active roster, which immediately prompted the question, “why not give someone else a try?”
One of the organization’s top prospects, Triston Casas, is hitting .271 with a .377 on-base percentage and .836 OPS since returning to Worcester on July 22. He had missed two months with an ankle injury.
But Casas was never considered for a promotion on Tuesday, according to Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Asked if he had any discussions about Casas, Cora said, “From my end? None.”
“It hasn’t been brought up to me, so that’s where we’re at,” Cora said. “He hasn’t played this year, he didn’t play last year. That’s the way I see it. He’s still developing. That’s my opinion. He needs to get his reps, keep getting his reps and keep getting better. He was out for three months. So, I think that’s part of the equation. We haven’t talked about that recently.”
Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom told the Herald that the Red Sox haven’t ruled out a promotion for Casas at some point this season, but given Casas’ need for continued development in the minors and the expected short-term nature of Hosmer’s injury, now wasn’t the right time.
The Sox still see themselves as being in the playoff hunt, admittedly with long odds, and aren’t quite ready to focus completely on the future.
Like Casas, Cordero has similarly been hitting well at Worcester, which prompted the Sox to add him to their roster temporarily on Sunday, when they were allowed a 27th man for the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa.
Cordero entered in the eighth inning as a pinch hitter for Bobby Dalbec and crushed a game-tying home run to the opposite field, but the Sox blew the game in the bottom half of the inning in the 5-3 loss.
“It just felt like Franchy, he’s swinging the bat well, we’ll just see how he goes this week and hopefully we can get Hosmer back as soon as possible,” Cora said.
Even with the homer, Cordero’s numbers in the big leagues have been rough to look at.
He’s hitting .222 with a .300 OBP and .680 OPS this year. He’s been just as bad defensively at first base, where he’s made eight errors in 46 games while costing the Red Sox four runs worse than average, according to the defensive runs saved metric.
Before his demotion back to the minors following the Hosmer acquisition, he was in a 23-game stretch in which he was hitting .132 with a .463 OPS and 34 strikeouts in 77 plate appearances. Story on his way
After a six-week layoff to recover from a bruised wrist, Trevor Story will begin his much-awaited rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Wednesday.
But because of how well Christian Arroyo has played at second base since his return from the injured list (.377 average, .977 OPS), it won’t be easy to take him out of the lineup.
“Cal?” Cora joked, as he’s referred to Arroyo as Cal Ripken Jr. because he’s been playing every day of late. “There’s a good chance he’ll play first base.”
Arroyo attempted to play first base last year, but hurt his hamstring trying to make a defensive play in his debut.
He’s been an excellent second baseman and serviceable third baseman/shortstop, so they think it’s worth taking a chance at him at first, given the struggles of Dalbec and Cordero.
It’s uncertain how long Hosmer will be out with his back injury.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s something that’s going to take too long,” Cora said. “But obviously, how he reacts to treatment, getting him some rest, it’ll benefit him.” Eovaldi hits the IL
Nathan Eovaldi was supposed to start Tuesday’s game, but was instead placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
It’s a concerning injury, particularly given Eovaldi has been pitching with substantially less velocity since he returned from an injury on July 15, but Cora thinks Eovaldi will pitch again this year.
He’s eligible for free agency after the season and is carrying a 5-3 record and 4.15 ERA.
“He hasn’t been able to bounce back,” Cora said. “Nothing structural. He feels a little bit of soreness. He’s gonna see the doctor again today. He had some testing yesterday. His last bullpen, he didn’t even try. He played catch and felt fatigue or whatever the feeling he has, so we’ve got to make sure he’s OK whenever that is.”
Josh Winckowski started Tuesday’s game in Eovaldi’s place. Houck throwing again
Closer Tanner Houck is back with the team after seeing a spine specialist and he’s begun throwing from flat ground, but needs to get built back up before he can try to pitch again. He’s unlikely to need surgery, Cora said.

Blue Jays look to continue dominance over Red Sox FLM
The Boston Red Sox were working toward a cleaner bill of health.
Then, Tuesday happened.
Pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (right-shoulder inflammation) and first baseman Eric Hosmer (lower-back inflammation) were placed on the injured list before the start of Boston's three-game series against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.
On top of the Red Sox's 9-3 loss in the opener, left fielder Tommy Pham and shortstop Xander Bogaerts were removed early due to back spasms.
"Pham (was hurt) in the same spot as (late last week), so we'll stay away from him," manager Alex Cora said. "Xander, same deal. He wasn't moving well. We'll stay away from him, too."
As the series continues Wednesday night in Boston, Cora's message is simple.
"We've got to keep going; there are no excuses," Cora said. "There's a lot of teams that are playing hurt and good baseball, so it really doesn't matter. ... We've got to do a good job this week to gain ground."
Josh Winckowski returned from Triple-A Worcester to start Tuesday in place of Eovaldi, who was shelved after having his originally scheduled start last Thursday pushed back. Eovaldi missed time in June and July with back issues.
Hosmer hoped to return following Sunday's MLB Little League Classic, but he was added to the 10-day list and Franchy Cordero was recalled to take his spot in Tuesday's lineup.
"It got to a point where we're kind of working backwards a little bit," Hosmer said. "The best thing is to stop right now and try and get it back to strength, then hopefully we're back and help this team for a late push as soon as we can."
Right-hander Brayan Bello (0-3, 8.47 ERA) will make his return from a Triple-A rehab assignment (left-groin strain) to start Wednesday for the Red Sox, who are 16-33 against American League East opponents and 3-11 against the Jays this season.
On July 24, Bello allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings against Toronto.
Right-hander Jose Berrios (9-5, 5.39) gets the nod for Toronto and will look to post another strong start, having held the Red Sox to three earned runs over 13 innings this season.
In nine career starts against Boston, Berrios is 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings.
Berrios allowed just two runs (one earned) and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings Thursday as he helped the Blue Jays earn the first of three straight wins in a four-game set against the Yankees.
Before winning in the Bronx, Berrios didn't make it out of the fourth inning in his first two outings following a 3-0 July.
"I think if he's got a good feel for it when the game starts, it's probably easier to get into a rhythm," Jays reliever David Phelps said of Berrios recently. "I think as a starting pitcher, when you give up (runs) early, you get to the point where you feel like you have to be perfect the rest of the way, and that's where you can get yourself into trouble."
The Blue Jays have a plus-46 run differential in the head-to-head series. Tuesday's 13-hit effort helped Toronto to its sixth straight win at Fenway Park.
During an eight-run third inning, former Boston outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. started his 2-for-3 night with a double and George Springer, who was sidelined with elbow inflammation earlier this month, hit a three-run triple.
"I'm doing my best," Springer said. "I want to be able to play. I've got to do what I've got to do to be able to play and hopefully keep contributing."

Dalbec at SS is.....well, it's something.
Bobby Dalbec has played just seven innings at SS in his professional career -- four last year, three at Salem in 2018.
Jeter Downs (ankle) is hurt -- was not in the Worcester lineup on Tuesday. No other Triple-A IFs on the 40-man roster. #RedSox
