Blue Jays @ Red Sox Thursday, 25th August 2022 7pm @ Fenway
Gaussman 9-9/ 2.99
Crawford 3-5/5.15
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 7:10pm EDT Written by Mark Ruelle
The surging Toronto Blue Jays wrap up their three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night in Boston. The Jays are back on top of the AL Wildcard standings and have even trimmed their deficit in the AL East to single digits behind the Yankees. The Red Sox are all but out of the playoff picture and will soon be preparing for a busy offseason in Beantown. The pitching matchup on Thursday night will feature a pair of right-handers as Kevin Gausman (9-9, 2.99) of the Blue Jays takes on Kutter Crawford (3-5, 5.14) of the Red Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm EST.
No Longer Singing the Blues The Blue Jays have surged back into the heart of the AL playoff picture as the team continues this current road trip. Since former bench coach John Schneider took over as manager following the firing of Charlie Montoyo, the Blue Jays have gone 20-13. After taking three of four from the Yankees over the weekend, the Blue Jays came into Fenway Park and continued their winning ways in Boston on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays used an eight-run 3rd inning to cruise to a 9-3 win in the first game. On Wednesday night, Toronto squeaked by the Red Sox 3-2 in 10-innings. George Springer, who was 3-for-5 on the night, doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning for the final margin of victory.
Schneider has brought both stability to the everyday lineup and the bullpen as he has clarified the roles of all the players on the team. Since he took over as manager, the team ERA has been a solid 3.24 as players laud Schneider for simplifying and clarifying bullpen roles. At the plate, the Blue Jays are hitting .271 since he took over and developed a consistent platoon system around his everyday players. On the mound on Thursday night will be Kevin Gausman. Gausman leads the team in strikeouts and is second in wins, ERA, quality starts and WAR. In his last five starts, Gausman is 2-2 in his last five starts with an ERA of 2.97. He has allowed 28 hits in 30.1 innings pitched and is striking out 9.79 batters per nine innings in this span. Against Boston this season, Gausman has been dominant. He is 3-0 in four starts with an ERA of 1.38.
Wait til Next Year A common refrain for the BoSox during some of the team's lean years was a resolute 'wait til next year'. As the season heads towards September and the Red Sox struggle through injuries and poor starting pitching, it has become evident that everyone will once again have to wait til 2023. Boston has been reduced to utilizing anywhere from two to three minor league pitchers this season as regulars in the team's rotation. The results have been a sub .500 team that has lost two straight games heading into Wednesday night. The Red Sox hung tough for much of Wednesday night's action but left 10 men on based and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the 3-2 loss.
Boston has seemingly waved the white flag without outwardly acknowledging it. The Sox are without Chris Sale for the rest of the season and have carefully utilized injured starting pitchers Michael Wacha and Nate Eovaldi. Everyday players like Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers have had to play through a series of nagging injuries and the idea of giving the star duo extended time off is certainly not off the table. On the mound on Thursday afternoon will be Kutter Crawford. Crawford has been thrust into a starter's role that he doesn't appear to be quite ready for this season. In his last five starts, Crawford is 1-2 with a 6.15 ERA. He has allowed 28 hits in 26.1 innings pitched in that span and has given up six home runs in the five games. Crawford is 0-1 in one start against Toronto this season, allowing five hits in six innings pitched with an ERA of 4.50.
Blue Jays at Red Sox Thursday, at 7:10 PM EST Partly Cloudy According to Forecast.io, it's expected to be 77° F with a 1% chance of rain and 7 MPH wind blowing right to left in Boston at 7:10 PM EST. Hourly Forecasts: Weather.com Forecast.io

Jays' Kevin Gausman rides hot streak into matchup with Red Sox FLM
The visiting Toronto Blue Jays have to be feeling good as they enter Thursday with a chance to sweep the Boston Red Sox.
Not only have the Blue Jays taken 12 of 15 games from the Red Sox this season, but they will turn to a hot starting pitcher in the finale of the three-game series.
Kevin Gausman (9-9, 2.99 ERA) will look to duplicate both his most recent performance and his season-long success against the Red Sox.
The right-hander tossed seven shutout, four-hit innings with seven strikeouts on Friday against the New York Yankees. It was the third time in his past four starts that Gausman lasted at least six innings and held the opposition scoreless.
"I know it sounds bad to say, but we're always trying to pitch better than the guy the night before," Gausman said. "We try to use what he did well to our advantage. Obviously, my stuff compared to Jose Berrios is completely different, but I definitely take notes when he's out there pitching. If they chase his changeup, I know they're going to chase my split."
Gausman has faced the Red Sox four times this season, going 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 37 strikeouts through 26 innings. Three of the four earned runs Boston has tagged him for came in the last meeting, but he still struck out 10 to earn the win on July 22.
Gausman has dealt 22 consecutive scoreless innings over his past three-plus road starts. The streak began at the end of his July 22 outing in Boston.
In his career against Boston, Gausman is 7-8 with a 3.82 ERA in 24 games (19 starts).
Berrios pitched six innings of two-run ball in his Wednesday start, beginning the Blue Jays' 3-2, 10-inning win. Toronto has won six of its past seven games; Boston has lost five of its past six.
"If (Berrios) can continue to do what he's doing down the stretch, that's a huge shot in the arm for us," Toronto interim manager John Schneider said.
Boston right-hander Kutter Crawford (3-5, 5.14 ERA) will make the start on Thursday. He has tossed a career-high six innings in four of his past seven starts, but the host Baltimore Orioles roughed him up for nine runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings on Friday.
The 26-year-old rookie looks to return to the form that saw him produce a 3.20 ERA in his previous seven outings.
"Every time I take the ball, I try to go as deep in the game as possible and give my team the best opportunity to win," he said.
In his last home outing on Aug. 13, Crawford limited the Yankees to two runs on two hits in six innings.
"The kid, he understands. He watches the game and he makes adjustments," Boston manager Alex Cora said after the outing against New York. "I like how he attacked the opposition."
His next opponent is similarly powerful. The Blue Jays have the top batting average (.262) and the third-most home runs (151) in the American League.
Toronto leadoff hitter George Springer, who is 15-for-25 (.600) in seven games since being activated from the injured list on Aug. 15, had the deciding double in Wednesday's extra inning.
Boston's run production all came off the bat of Franchy Cordero, who was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. He hit a two-run homer, his second long ball in three games, and finished 2-for-3 on Wednesday.

Alex Cora Admits Uncomfortable Truth About Red Sox Offense Over Last Month
by Lauren Campbell Willand
When the 2022 Major League Baseball season began, the Red Sox offense looked like it was going to be a legitimate threat not just in the American League, but the league as a whole.
But between injuries and playing desperate baseball, Boston’s bats haven’t lived up to the hype.
Yes, pitching and defense also are areas the Red Sox have struggled with this season, but the offensive struggles were highlighted during the 10-inning 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
Toronto took a one-run lead in the top of the 10th when George Springer drove in old friend Jackie Bradley Jr. — who’s having himself a nice series against his former Red Sox team. But even with runners on first and second for Boston with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, they couldn’t get anything done after Kiké Hernández struck out swinging to end the game.
“We have struggled offensively for a while,” manager Alex Cora told reporters after the game, per The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. “I know people talk about the pitching and defense, but offensively, we haven’t done much in a while. The swing and miss, chasing. You start looking at where we rank since June 27, it’s not pretty. It’s late August. It’s the same at-bats. As a group, we have to take pride in that. We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to make sure we swing at strikes.”
When Cora said “it’s not pretty” he wasn’t joking. Check out this excerpt from McWilliams.
Entering Wednesday night, the Red Sox had swung at 33.9 percent of pitches outside of the strike zone since June 27, the seventh-highest chase rate in MLB in that time. Their swing-and-miss rate (11.8 percent) was likewise seventh-highest in the majors over that stretch.

There are holes on the team, and some highly-paid offensive players doing relatively little. But we have given 46 starts to Winc (13), Crawford (10), Houck (4), Davis (3), Whitlock (9), Bello (4), and Seabold (3). And 23 of those starts fame from Sale. We should win 15 of those games. Guys like Winc, Crawford, and Seabold are probably going to win 8. That's a loss of 7 games right there.

Blue Jays survive 9th, win 6-5 in 10th to sweep Red Sox AP
BOSTON (AP) Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano pitched his way out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning at Fenway Park.
Then he had to shut the Red Sox down one more time.
''I kind of tried to erase what happened the last inning, because it was a lot of adrenaline,'' he said after leading Toronto to a 6-5 win over Boston in 10 innings on Thursday night. ''You had to stay focused. We've got three more hitters coming up and like, let's win a game.''
One night after earning a save in an extra-inning victory over Boston, Romano (5-3) picked up the win to seal Toronto's three-game sweep. The Blue Jays, who took three out of four against the AL East-leading Yankees to start the week, have won eight straight games at Fenway Park this year.
''We can hang with anyone, you know what I mean?'' Romano said. ''We came into their spot and yeah, won a bunch of games. So I think it was a huge road trip. Good for the morale and just letting us know we're for real.''
The Red Sox had a runner on third with nobody out in the eighth and then loaded the bases against Romano with no outs in the ninth, and both times failed to score.
In the 10th, automatic runner Cavan Biggio took third on a groundout and then rushed home on George Springer's grounder to short, sliding head-first under the tag with the throw from Xander Bogaerts coming in too high.
Danny Jansen had three hits, including a home run, for the Blue Jays, who have won seven of their last eight games. They are 8-1 in Boston this year, winning the last two in extra innings.
After J.D. Martinez singled to lead off the ninth and Bogaerts doubled, Christian Arroyo was intentionally walked to load the bases. Romano struck out Franchy Cordero and then, with five infielders playing in, Kike Hernandez hit a hard chopper to third baseman Matt Chapman, who stepped on third and threw to first for the inning-ending double play.
''He's got an amazing internal clock and obviously a cannon for an arm,'' Toronto interim manager John Schneider said. ''So you want the ball hit to him in basically any scenario. He showed it this entire series.''
John Schrieber (3-3) did not allow a hit in the 10th but took the loss on the unearned run that scored on a fielder's choice. Reese McQuire had three hits for Boston, which has lost four in a row and six of seven games.
McGuire led off the eighth with a line drive into the right field corner that skipped under Teoscar Hernandez's glove and went to the wall, turning a double into a triple.
Adam Cimber struck out Bobby Dalbec, hit Jarren Duran and then fanned Tommy Pham before Tim Mayza got Rafael Devers on a hard grounder that went off first baseman Vladimir Guerrero's glove but slowed down enough for second baseman Santiago Espinal to field and throw back to first for the third out.
GLOVE WORK
Dalbec was busy at first base.
In the fourth, he couldn't get under a foul popup near the stands, allowing Guererro to remain at the plate with two outs. He followed with a two-run single to give the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead.
But in the sixth, he came off the bag to grab Devers' bad throw on Santiago Espinal's hard chopper to third. Dalbec reached out as he landed to tag Espinal in the back before he reached the base.
Jansen followed with a solo home run. The 108 mph shot was caught bare-handed by a fan in the front row of the seats atop the Green Monster.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: 2B Trevor Story went 3-for-4 with a single, double, and home run in a rehab start for Double-A Portland. ... LHP James Paxton will be shut down after tearing a side muscle while trying to come back from Tommy John surgery. He left his first rehab start last week after just two batters.
UP NEXT
Blue Jays: Return home to face the Angels. Toronto RHP Mitch White (0-1) will face LHP Reid Detmers (4-4).
Red Sox: Open a three-game series against the Rays. RHP Michael Wacha (8-1) will start for Boston; Tampa Bay's starter is TBD.
