Why’s Bobby Dalbec at shortstop for Boston Red Sox? Alex Cora explains

BOSTON — Manager Alex Cora has crafted arguably his most interesting Red Sox lineup of the 2022 season.
He has first baseman/third baseman Bobby Dalbec making his first ever professional start at shortstop here Wednesday against the Blue Jays. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.
Dalbec has played just 4 innings in the major leagues at shortstop (two chances, two putouts), all coming last year. He played just 3 innings there in the minor leagues. He never played shortstop in college.
Xander Bogaerts is out because his back is bothering him. Christian Arroyo got banged up (knee and back) sliding into first base Tuesday.
Kiké Hernández — who has 8 defensive runs saved in 592 career innings at shortstop — is playing second base.
Dalbec has played shortstop in the shift as a third baseman, Cora pointed out.
“He’s played on that side most of the time in the shift,” Cora said. “So I know we always talk about him playing second in an emergency. But you’ve got to turn double plays, you’ve got to do all that stuff. So I asked him if he’s comfortable on that side and we’re going with him at short.”
Did Cora consider Hernández at shortstop and Dalbec at second? Dalbec has appeared in two games off the bench at second (5 ⅓ innings) in the majors.
“(It’s) more about Bobby playing second,” Cora said. “Yeah, we talk about it in an emergency but it’s a nine inning game and double plays and all that stuff comes into play. It’s a lot easier for him throwing everything to his left, flipping everything to his left. Maybe the first ground ball they hit, he makes an error and it’s on me. But the way I see it, this is the best alignment.”
Righty Brayan Bello, who is starting for Boston, is a groundball pitcher.
“Bobby’s got good hands. He’s a good defender at third base,” Cora said.

200 million plus payroll....
Pete Abraham @peteabe · 1h Cora said Dalbec is comfortable on the left side. They prefer him there as opposed to second base. Three of the bench players — Arroyo, Pham and Refsynder — are in various stages of banged up. They don’t want to use them. So very short-handed tonight. Kutter Crawford can play OF.

Alex Speier @alexspeier · 5h Reese McGuire lined out. The Red Sox lose to the Blue Jays, 9-3. The Red Sox are 60-63. In the Wild Card Era, there has been one team (the 2009 Twins) that made the playoffs after a 60-63 start or worse...but those Twins only had to chase down one team (the Tigers) that collapsed America simply stopped teaching anyone but the elite. Speier is comparing the 6-team playoff era to the 4- or 5-team playoff era? The RS are likely out of it, but comparing a 60-63 record, when you usually needed 92 wins to get in, to an era where 88 wins might get you in, is wildly in appropriate.

Springer 3 hits, RBI double in 10th as Blue Jays top Red Sox AP
BOSTON (AP) George Springer got three hits, including a 10th-inning double on the first pitch from Boston reliever Ryan Brasier that scored automatic runner Jackie Bradley Jr. and lifted the Toronto Blue Jays over the Red Sox 3-2 Wednesday night.
''Honestly, I was just looking to get Jackie to third,'' Springer said. ''He's a really good pitcher, so I was just going up there looking to be aggressive.''
Bradley started the 10th on second, the only time on base in the game for the former Boston outfielder. He signed with Toronto on Aug. 9, five days after being released by the Red Sox.
Adam Cimber (10-5) pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up one hit. Jordan Romano worked a scoreless 10th inning, issuing an intentional walk to Rafael Devers before getting his 27th save.
Brasier (0-3) took the loss.
''We have struggled offensively for a while, the swing-and-miss, the chasing,'' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, ''It's late August and it's the same at-bats. As a group, we have to take pride in that. We've got to be better. Make sure we swing at strikes and put the ball in play when it matters, and we haven't done that in a while.''
Franchy Cordero's sixth homer, a two-run drive in the second off Jose Berrios, made it 2-0.
Berrios went six innings, giving up five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
''The bullpen was outstanding and Berrios awesome,'' Toronto interim manager John Schneider. ''You really can't say enough about the job the bullpen did in really tough spots . and Jordy just really, really clutch in the 10th. That was fun.''
In his first start since July 24, Red Sox rookie Brayan Bello gave up two runs over five innings and struck out a career-high seven. The right-hander was activated from the injured list after missing 17 games with a right groin strain.
Springer singled in the fourth and later scored on a single by Alejandro Kirk.
The Blue Jays tied it the next inning on singles by Whit Merrifield, Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Boston missed a couple of late-game opportunities.
In the seventh, with two outs against reliever Yimi GarcIa, the Red Sox loaded the bases when Bobby Dalbec walked, Reese McGuire singled and Jarren Duran reached on Guerrero's error at first base. Rob Refsnyder flied out to Bradley in center to end the threat.
Toronto left-hander Tim Mayza made his first appearance since Aug. 6 after being sidelined with a right shoulder dislocation, and the Red Sox put runners at second and third against him with one out.
Anthony Bass replaced Mayza and struck out Kike Hernandez, intentionally walked Cordero and struck out Dalbec.
TRAINER'S ROOM

RHP Tanner Houck, on the injured list since Aug. 6 with lower back inflammation, began throwing on flat ground on Tuesday, the first step in his progression. ... BOSTON — The Red Sox entered Wednesday 3-11 with a negative-46 run differential against the Blue Jays this season.
They were without Xander Bogaerts (back), Tommy Pham (back) and Christian Arroyo (knee, back). They had rookie Brayan Bello on the mound and Bobby Dalbec out of position. He was making his first ever professional start at shortstop.
Boston kept it close, bringing the game to extras but it lost 3-2 to Toronto in 10 innings here at Fenway Park.
George Springer crushed an RBI double off the Green Monster against Ryan Brasier in the top of the 10th to put the Blue Jays ahead.
Boston failed to plate the automatic runner in the bottom of the 10th. Alex Verdugo flied out to center field. J.D. Martinez grounded out to third base and Kiké Hernández struck out swinging after Toronto intentionally walked Rafael Devers.
Red Sox squander eighth-inning opportunity
Alex Verdugo singled to lead off the eighth inning and Rafael Devers doubled with one out to put two runners in scoring position. But the Blue Jays brought in righty Anthony Bass who struck out both Kiké Hernández and Bobby Dalbec swinging.
Reese McGuire led off the ninth inning with a single. But Jarren Duran then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
Dalbec at SS
Bobby Dalbec made his first professional start at shortstop Wednesday with Xander Bogaerts (back) out. Christian Arroyo also couldn’t start after he got banged up (knee and back) sliding into first base Tuesday.
Dalbec cleanly fielded all six grounders to him. He had putouts on each play, including starting a 6-4-3 double play in the second inning.
Dalbec entering Wednesday having played just 4 innings in the major leagues at shortstop (two chances, two putouts), all coming last year. He played just 3 innings there in the minor leagues.
Cordero homers
Franchy Cordero gave the Red Sox an early 2-0 lead. His two-run homer to left field went an estimated 350 feet.
It marked Cordero’s sixth homer this season.
Bello strikes out 7, tops out at 98.7 mph
Red Sox rookie starter Brayan Bello pitched 5 innings, allowing two runs, six hits and one walk while striking out seven. He topped out at 98.7 mph with his four-seam fastball.
He threw 32 two-seam fastballs, averaging 96.4 mph and topping out at 97.9 mph, per Baseball Savant. His 10 four-seam fastballs averaged 97.5 mph.
He recorded seven swings-and-misses with his changeup, four with his two-seamer and one each with his four-seamer and slider.
He allowed RBI singles to Alejandro Kirk (fourth inning) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (fifth inning).
Thursday’s series finale
The Red Sox and Blue Jays will finish their three-game series here Thursday.
Kevin Gausman (9-9, 2.99 ERA) will start for Toronto opposite Red Sox righty Kutter Crawford (3-5, 5.14 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.

With help from veteran teammate, Bello has strongest outing No. 3 prospect sets career highs in innings (five) and strikeouts (seven) in start vs. Blue Jays 1:52 AM ADT Ian Browne
Ian Browne @ianmbrowne
BOSTON -- The Brayan Bello who stood on the Fenway Park mound for five electric innings on Wednesday night was the one who garnered all the hype during his ascension through the farm system.
The growing pains Bello experienced in his first three starts are subsiding, and that was evident throughout his performance on a night the Red Sox lost, 3-2, to the Blue Jays in 10 innings.
“I was attacking the hitters and I was always ahead in the count,” Bello said after the best performance of his young career. “I’ve learned how to attack batters right now.”
Over five innings, Bello allowed two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out seven.
“He was excellent,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “That was good stuff. We felt in Houston, he was turning the corner.”
However, in that relief outing in Houston on Aug. 3, Bello threw just 16 pitches before suffering a left groin strain that kept him on the injured list until Monday. What has keyed Bello’s turnaround isn’t an improvement of his stuff, but rather his grasp of the mental game.
“You can’t just stay on one side of the plate; you’ve got to mix it up. From pitch one, that was electric. Weak contact, swing-and-misses, four-seamers up, changeup. He was really good,” said Cora.
Veteran teammates Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Wacha, Nick Pivetta and Rich Hill have played a role in Bello’s improvement.
“I learned a lot from the veteran players here. They taught me how to prepare, to face a team and how to prepare and have a good routine in between starts. So that’s been a huge help for me,” said Bello.
In particular, Bello cited Eovaldi.
“I’m very thankful for him, for Nate,” Bello said. “I think the progress I’ve had since my last start right now has to do a lot with him. He’s been a huge help for me and he’s always been there to help me and I really appreciate it.”
Not only was Bello effective, but he was efficient, throwing just 65 pitches in his five frames. Of the 37 swings the Blue Jays took against him, they whiffed on 13 -- six of them coming on changeups.
“In the second part of the game, that’s when he started using it,” said Cora. “They made some adjustments, started getting to some pitches down and in. [Pitching coach Dave Bush] went out there and talked about mixing it up. He started using the changeup, but was still using the four-seamer. That strikeout to [Matt] Chapman I think it was, 0-2, four-seamer, 97, 98, swing-and-miss.”
That will play at any level.
Working ahead is what allowed Bello to go to that changeup.
“It helped me a lot when I had to use it,” Bello said. “It worked really well and it was good for me to have the opportunity to use it and it was effective.”
The next step for Bello will be when Cora gives him the opportunity to go deeper in games. But that has to be gradual.
“We were talking about that when I took him out,” said Cora. “He hasn’t pitched five innings in a while, even before we called him up. He wanted more, of course. I love that. I told him, ‘You haven't gone five in like two months or three months.’ He smiled.”
Bello is ranked No. 3 in Boston’s farm system by MLB Pipeline, and is the top-rated pitcher.
With the Red Sox starting to fade from postseason contention -- they are seven back in the American League Wild Card standings with 38 games left in the season -- Bello should get regular work for the rest of the season.
His next start will come at Target Field on Monday against the Twins.
“I feel like tonight was a good step forward for me,” Bello said.
The Red Sox look forward to watching the many other steps forward that are likely to come from their 23-year-old righty. Did you like this story?

Injuries & Moves: Bogaerts, Arroyo, Pham sidelined; Dalbec starts at SS 12:35 AM ADT
Keep track of the Red Sox’s recent transactions and injury updates throughout the season. LATEST NEWS
Aug. 24: INF Christian Arroyo too sore to start Wednesday In Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays, Arroyo slid into first base in an unsuccessful pursuit of an infield hit. By Wednesday, he had a sore back and knee and was too sore to play. With Xander Bogaerts and Tommy Pham already out with back injuries, Red Sox manager Alex Cora re-shuffled his lineup in unique fashion, giving Bobby Dalbec his first career start at shortstop.
So why Dalbec at short rather than Kiké Hernández, who celebrated his 31st birthday starting at second base? Hernández has made 61 career starts at short. This was Dalbec's first.
"He’s played on that side most of the time in the shift, so I know we always talk about him playing second in an emergency, but you have to turn double plays, you have to do all that stuff, so I asked him if he’s comfortable on that side and we’re going with him at short," said Cora.
Aug. 24: RHP Brayan Bello reinstated from 15-day injured list; RHP Josh Winckowski optioned to Triple-A Worcester Bello is back after missing three weeks with a left groin strain. Boston's top pitching prospect started Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Winckowski, who was hit hard for the second straight start on Tuesday night, was optioned.
RHP Tyler Danish (right forearm strain) Expected return: Late August Danish's return to the Red Sox was delayed when he tested positive for COVID-19 on Aug. 15. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Danish will resume his Minor League rehab assignment and pitch on Friday and Sunday for Double-A Portland. (Last updated: Aug. 24)
2B Trevor Story (hairline fracture, right wrist) Expected return: Late August/Early September Story started his Minor League rehab assignment for Double-A Portland on Aug. 24, going 0-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice fly in three plate appearances. The second baseman last played for the Red Sox on July 12. The Sox are keeping it open as to how many rehab games Story will need. (Last updated: Aug. 24)
