Rafael Devers, Bobby Dalbec power Red Sox past Nationals By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 30, 2020, 1 hour ago
There were 20 mile-per-hour winds at Fenway Park on Sunday, and the Red Sox took full advantage of it in their 9-5 series victory against the Washington Nationals.
Xander Bogaerts homered in the first inning off Nationals starter Austin Voth. It was Bogaerts’ second homer in as many days, both of which came in the first innings. The Sox combined for four homers on the day, including two from Rafael Devers ( a solo blast and a two-run shot) and a Bobby Dalbec homer in the third during his debut.
Devers went 4 for 4, drove in three runs and scored three times. Dalbec was called up before the game when the Sox dealt Mitch Moreland to the Padres for a pair of prospects. Starting at first base and batting eighth in the order, Dalbec went 2 for 4 with two RBI.

Bogaerts, Kevin Plawecki and Kevin Pillar had two hits apiece.
Zack Godley allowed all five runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, but relievers Josh Osich, Josh Taylor, Ryan Brasier and Austin Brice shut down the defending World Series champions the rest of the way.
The Sox took an 8-2 lead after three innings, and pounded out 15 hits in all to take 2 of 3 in the series. They open a three-game series with the Braves beginning Monday night at Fenway.

Red Sox notes: Brock Holt says Sox never showed interest in reunion By Jason Mastrodonato | jason.mastrodonato@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald PUBLISHED: August 30, 2020 at 6:27 p.m. | UPDATED: August 30, 2020 at 6:29 p.m.
After everything Brock Holt did for the Red Sox, he was hoping for at least a phone call.
With seven years in a Red Sox uniform, Holt picked up two World Series rings and was considered one of the most motivated volunteers on the team. A Jimmy Fund captain, he could be found in the halls of the children’s cancer ward on his off-days.
But when Holt hit free agency last winter for the first time, the Sox never made an offer.
“I didn’t really hear from the Red Sox this year, which was a little strange to me,” Holt said before Friday’s game between the Sox and the Nationals. “First time through free agency, didn’t really know what to expect. Figured I would get a phone call or something. They called a couple times just checking in, but it was never even really close to offering. I think early on in the process I knew it was probably the end.”
The Sox eventually signed Jose Peraza to a one-year, $3-million deal to fill their need at the utility spot. Peraza has hit just .242.
Holt signed with the Brewers in February for one-year, $2.5 million, with a $5 million option for 2021. But after a 3-for-30 start in minimal playing time, Holt was released last week and picked up by the Nationals on Saturday.
Holt said he was sad to leave the group of guys in Boston he won two titles with.
“That’s part of the business of baseball,” Holt said. “That’s the sucky part of it but that happens. Sometimes, it’s time to move on. It’s tough to see because we were so close and such a fun group of guys to be a part of. That’s something we’ll have forever. I’m super close still with every single one of those guys and wish them nothing but the best. That’s baseball. Things happen and teams rebuild. That’s what the Red Sox are doing right now.”
Holt is no longer the Jimmy Fund captain but still lives in Boston. His wife tweeted on Sunday that they’re still involved in helping out locally.
“Me and my wife fell in love with the city and got involved in some organizations that meant a lot to us,” he said. “Just being here year-round was something that made sense. Still have our house here, my wife’s pregnant and is about to have a baby. She didn’t really want to leave this year.”
The Sox had a pregame tribute to Holt on Sunday, showing highlights of his playoff cycle against the Yankees in 2018 and his time with the Jimmy Fund kids. Holt tipped his cap to the empty crowd in jest.
“It’s pretty cool, they’ve got a cool setup over here,” Holt said. “I think the (visiting) clubhouse is actually nicer now than it is normally. It’s weird. Everyone’s like, ‘Hey, you know where the cage is?’ I’m like, ‘No, I have no idea. I don’t know where anything is over here.’ It’s cool to be back. I drove over (Friday) … to get my COVID test and went back home, was waiting for the results. It just happened to work out. This is a special place for me so to be here right now, it’s pretty cool.”
Happy-go-lucky
Rafael Devers entered Sunday 3-for-25 with 12 strikeouts over his previous six games, but manager Ron Roenicke said Devers came to the park in a happy mood.
The mood resulted in a 4-for-4 day with two homers, three RBIs and a walk.
“It was just one of those days I felt great,” Devers said. “As soon as I got here, I was just telling everybody how good I was feeling. An overwhelming sense of happiness that I had today. The team winning makes it even better, but it was just a great day. I was just happy today for the most part.”
Devers had a 10-pitch at-bat that ended with a homer off Daniel Hudson.
“I just like to swing,” he said. “I love being out there and I love swinging the bat. Sometimes the days are good, sometimes the days are not. Today was great. I just like to swing. Doesn’t matter the pitch. If it’s in the zone, I’m swinging. That’s what I like to do.”
Perez hurting
A blister on the finger of Martin Perez could cause him to have his next start pushed back.
Perez started Friday night and pitched through a blister that he said affected his game. He allowed six runs.
“We may push him back a day we’re trying to figure it out,” Roenicke said. “It’s a pretty good blister he’s got on his finger. We’ll see how tomorrow goes but we may end up pushing him back a day.”

Padres acquired 1B Mitch Moreland from the Red Sox for OF Jeisson Rosario and 3B Hudson Potts.Moreland has had a big season, batting .328/.430/.746 with eight home runs and 21 RBI. He would figure to get most of his at-bats in the designated hitter spot. Moreland gives the Padres another weapon against right-handed pitching. The Red Sox are promoting Bobby Dalbec to take Moreland's roster spot and he should see plenty of time at first base, along with Michael Chavis. Considering how little we paid for him, that's a pretty nice return. A nice trading season is starting to take shape. It's a good return for Moreland, though I'm not happy to see Moreland go. That said, I fully understand that trade. Good luck to Mitch in San Diego. At least he should have a really fun ride.

Bill Koch @billkoch25 · 46s Bobby Dalbec has homered. It's 8-2 #RedSox in the 3rd. Went up and over the Pesky Pole to deep right. It's nice to see the kids come up and have a good game. Good for Dalbec.

And IMO, that is why u dont rush the kids up they learn that stuff on the farmYup. A lot of this gets criticized as service manipulation, and some of it is, but I'd rather have these guys fixing their issues in the minors. I am not willing to punt next season, though, and I don't think Henry is either. In order to have a competitive team, we need players who can help us next year. I am 100% in favor of building our farm, but we need to keep our current team competitive.

He is getting flak on twitter by a few saying it should be pitching coming back but jesus, he got a pitching chip for Workman deal and GMs hold onto pitching prospects like their own children
Like I said in the Boston Red Sox news thread, Bloom said they need a wave of prospects they get some IF/ OF kids now, means they can focus on pitching when it comes to draft and international draft Agree with you here Jon. You take the best package you can get, even though it might not be an immediate area of need. IMO, it works the same way with the draft.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 3m If you think this is corny, so be it. But it never gets old hearing a player talk about making his MLB debut.
Bobby Dalbec called his folks on the drive to Boston from Pawtucket. He was sweating and trying to drive extra safe.
His HR ball is going to them. Cool stuff. I'm with you Pete. I think it's cool stuff. I think the reaction of the parents is some of the coolest stuff.

Welcome to the bigs: Dalbec HRs in debut
By Ian Browne @ianmbrowne August 30, 2020
BOSTON -- Before the emotion-filled moment of hitting his first Major League homer could come for Red Sox prospect Bobby Dalbec, he first needed to put the pedal to the metal and get to Fenway Park.
It was a wild Sunday for Boston's No. 3 ranked prospect (per MLB Pipeline), which started innocently enough. At about 11 a.m. ET, he was at the alternate training site in Pawtucket, R.I., stretching out and getting ready for batting practice.
• Box score
Shortly thereafter, the Red Sox traded Mitch Moreland to the Padres for two prospects.
The immediate spinoff of that move was that Dalbec would become the first baseman for the Red Sox. Not just for the rest of the season (and who knows how long after that) but for Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. game against the Nationals at Fenway Park.
In what wound up a dream-like MLB debut for Dalbec and a 9-5 win for the Red Sox, the first thing Dalbec needed to do was pack.
“[Pawtucket manager] Billy [McMillon] called me into his office and told me to hurry up and pack,” said Dalbec. “I went back to the hotel, grabbed my suitcase, threw some stuff in there and then hit the road.”
Fortunately, the ride from Pawtucket to Boston is only about 45 minutes. Once he turned the ignition on in his rental car, Dalbec called his parents to tell them he was on the way to the Major Leagues. Then he called some other important people in his life.
When Dalbec got to Fenway, there was basically enough time to greet some members of the coaching staff and teammates, do some minimal pregame work and then play baseball.
It was all moving so fast, which was good, because the corner infielder didn’t have much time to think or get nervous.
He let his instincts take over. And in his second at-bat, on an 0-2 pitch by Nats righty Javy Guerra, Dalbec belted a two-run homer down the line in right field. The first home run -- and hit -- of his career was tough to see, thanks to a blinding sun and swirling wind in right field.
Nationals right fielder Adam Eaton never saw it, not that he could have done anything about it. The baseball landed well into the seats in right, projected at 373 feet by Statcast.
“I knew I barreled it,” said Dalbec. “I didn’t really know where at first and then I kind of saw it right over the pole so I was hoping that it stayed fair.”
And then he ran around the bases and wondered where his 230-pound frame had gone.
“I felt pretty weightless out there, honestly,” Dalbec said. “It was very surreal. Everything kind of happened so fast. I think that helped me out today. I pretty much just showed up, got a couple of swings in the cage, played catch with [José] Peraza for a couple of minutes and then I was in there. So I think that helped me, honestly, not really thinking about anything. I just went out there and tried to play.”
Though there is a lot to like about Dalbec as a player, his power tool has always been his biggest separator.
The baseball that Dalbec smashed over the wall will go to the two people who have had the biggest impact on his life.
“I’ll give it to my parents,” said Dalbec. “They sacrificed a lot for me to play all the time throughout the years. Lots of traveling, lots of money on travel baseball and just playing a lot. I owe it all to them.”
Dalbec, who added a bloop single in the seventh, is likely to get the majority of playing time at first base for the rest of the season, though Michael Chavis will also be mixed in.
The 25-year-old Dalbec could also see some time at his natural position of third base when Rafael Devers needs a day off.
“Yeah, it’s a great opportunity to get some at-bats, get some playing time under my belt, and show people what I can do, but continue to get better every day. That’s the biggest thing,” Dalbec said.
In Dalbec and Devers, you could be looking at a corner infield that will be around for a long time in Boston. Devers, just 23 years old, also had a big day, going 4-for-4 with a pair of homers.
You get the sense Devers was more excited about what Dalbec did than about his own monster day.
“It brings a ton of energy,” Devers said. “Mostly he’s such a great kid, such a great person, having him around brings a ton of energy. You see something like that so early in his career and we’re extremely excited for him, so happy for him. Bobby is a person who brings that good spirit and good vibes. The team was very excited for him.”
“Yeah, pretty fun to see,” said Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke. “First game in the big leagues and hitting a homer? Pretty cool. And I think you need that. When you come up, you need to have a good first day. I know there were a couple strikeouts, but you still need to have a good first day and defensively, [he] made some nice plays. So I thought it was a great day for him.”
Once the fast-paced day had finally slowed down, Dalbec took some time to reflect on the journey that got him to Sunday.
“It means a lot,” Dalbec said. “I think about all the tough times playing -- Minor Leagues, college, all that stuff. Everything that’s kind of led up to this moment. Today was kind of a fire drill, like I said earlier. It’s very surreal. It hasn’t sunk in yet.”

RED SOX NOTEBOOK For Rafael Devers and teammates, Sunday’s offensive performance was a breeze By Julian McWilliams Globe Staff,Updated August 30, 2020, 6:36 p.m.
There were 20 mile-per-hour winds and the Sox took full advantage of it in their 9-5 victory Sunday against the Washington Nationals.
Xander Bogaerts homered in the first inning off Nationals starter Austin Voth. It was Bogaerts’ second homer in as many days, both of which came in the first inning. The Sox combined for four homers on the day, including two from Rafael Devers (a solo blast and a two-run shot) and a Bobby Dalbec homer in the third during his debut. The Sox compiled 15 hits on the day, eight of which were extra-base hits.
“We’ve been working hard for good at-bats,” Devers said. “A day like today where everybody puts it together, that’s what it looks like. That’s what it can look like.”

Devers’s 4-for-4 day didn’t have any cheapies. Each hit had an exit velocity over 100 miles per hour, including his last at-bat of the game, a homer to right that left the bat at 112.8 miles per hour. He saw 10 pitches in that at-bat, and in the first inning he also saw 10 pitches and negotiated a walk, which gave you an inkling that he might be locked in Sunday. The home run was his first ever on an at-bat that long. After starting the day hitting just .216, Devers lifted his batting average to .240 with a .747 OPS. Get 108 Stitches in your inboxGet everything baseball from the Globe's Red Sox reporters every Monday-Friday during baseball season, and weekly in the off season.
“I felt great,” Devers said regarding his day. “As soon as I got here I was telling everybody how good I was feeling.”
Said manager Ron Roenicke: “I’m hoping it gets him going. He was different today. Energy and smiling. He just seemed to be really happy today, from the beginning he was. Just a real good day from him.” Martinez leaves game, Perez possibly pushed back
J.D. Martinez left the game in the eighth inning after being hit on the wrist with a Ryne Harper fastball. X-rays were negative, Roenicke said afterward, and Martinez is day-to-day.

Meanwhile, Martin Perez has a blister on his throwing hand and could be pushed back. He tentatively is scheduled to start Wednesday in the series finale against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway.
“It’s a pretty good blister he’s got on his finger,” Roenicke said. “We’re going to see how [Monday] goes with him.” Not quite a high five for Godley
Zack Godley is the only Red Sox starting pitcher this year other than Nate Eovaldi and Perez to pitch into the fifth inning. Godley entered Sunday’s start against the Nationals with a whopping 7.29 ERA. He surrendered five runs in the game on seven hits — two of which were solo shots by Josh Harrison and Eric Thames — in his 4⅔ innings of work. Zack Godley delivers in the first inning of Sunday's game. Zack Godley delivers in the first inning of Sunday's game.Matthew J. Lee/Globe staff
It looked as if Godley would make it through the fifth inning for the first time this season, but with two outs in the top half of the frame, Thames homered to right-center. Then, Adam Eaton plated another with his triple to right, shrinking the Sox’ lead to 8-5 and forcing Roenicke to go to his bullpen. Turner had fun at Fenway
Nationals shortstop Trea Turner was 11 for 15 against the Red Sox this weekend. He tied the record for the most hits against a Red Sox team in a series (Marty McManus Detroit Tigers in 1929; Sam Rice Washington Senators in 1924) ... During a simulated game at the team’s alternate site, top pitching prospect Bryan Mata had to be helped off the field with what appeared to be a lower-body injury. The Globe confirmed that the initial diagnosis was a hamstring cramp. He’ll be re-evaluated Monday ... The Red Sox played a video tribute to Brock Holt during Sunday’s game. Holt was not re-signed after the 2019 season, then joined the Nationals on Saturday after being released last week by the Milwaukee Brewers ... Colten Brewer will take the ball for the Sox in Monday’s opener of the three-game series against the Braves.
