Nationals vs Red Sox Sunday 30th August 2020 1:30pm @ Fenway Park
Voth 0-3/ 6.55 First time in his career facing the Red Sox.
Godley 0-3/ 7.29 Got blasted in his last start by the Orioles.
Nationals' Turner looks to continue hot streak vs. Godley, Red Sox FLM
Trea Turner looks to continue his torrid stretch at the plate on Sunday afternoon when the visiting Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox play the rubber match of their three-game series.
Turner, who went 5-for-5 in Washington's 5-3 setback on Saturday, carries a career-high 14-game hitting streak and on-base run of 20 consecutive contests into the series finale. The 27-year-old is batting .474 (27-for-57) with three homers, 11 RBIs and 17 runs scored during his hitting streak.
Turner is 6-for-15 with two solo homers in his career against Boston's Zack Godley (0-3, 7.29 ERA), who will get the start on Sunday after fellow right-hander Nathan Eovaldi was placed on the injured list with a sore right calf.
Godley allowed three runs and walked five in just 2 2/3 innings in a 5-4 loss to Baltimore in his last outing, one week ago.
"He knows how many walks he had (on Sunday) so he's concerned about it," Boston manager Ron Roenicke told reporters. "Those walks hurt, no question."
Godley owns a 3-1 record with a 5.53 ERA in nine career appearances (five starts) versus Washington.
Howie Kendrick, who is 7-for-14 against the 30-year-old Godley, has collected at least one RBI in a career-best eight straight games entering Sunday's contest.
Kurt Suzuki enters the finale on a career-best 11-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .333 (13-for-39).
Washington right-hander Austin Voth (0-3, 6.65 ERA) will get the nod on Sunday after a particularly brutal start in his last outing. Voth allowed six runs on as many hits in 3 2/3 innings of an 11-8 setback versus Miami on Monday.
"We need him," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. "We said this coming in: He earned the right to be the fifth starter. We've got to fix him. ... Hopefully his next outing will be better."
Voth will be making his 19th appearance, 16th start and first versus Boston in his career.
The 28-year-old may be tasked to go deep into the game after the Red Sox used seven pitchers on Saturday.
Voth would be wise to keep a keen eye on Xander Bogaerts, who belted a three-run homer among his three hits on Saturday.
"I feel like I'm getting some good at-bats and getting some good results," said Bogaerts, who is batting .357 (15-for-42) in his last 11 games.
"It's definitely good as a baseball player to get some results, to see all the work we put in paying off."
Boston has answered a season-high nine-game skid by winning five of its last nine contests.
Juan Soto has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games for Washington, which has dropped four of its last six overall.
The Nationals stranded 14 runners on base Saturday, much to the chagrin of Martinez.
"Unlucky. We are swinging the bats well, just one of those days. (If) we had one or two hits in a big moment, the game is different," he said. "Just keep playing hard, I think they swung really well today so just got to come back tomorrow."

Notes: Eovaldi's IL outlook; Pivetta update
By Ian Browne @ianmbrowne August 29, 2020
BOSTON -- After being skipped in the rotation this week due to a nagging right calf, Nathan Eovaldi had been in day-to-day mode for his next start.
However, the Red Sox reversed course on Saturday, placing the flame-throwing righty on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 26. He will next be eligible to pitch on Sept. 5 against the Blue Jays.
What led to the change in plans?
“We had an MRI on his calf. There’s a very mild strain, but we feel like to do it right, we want him to throw two bullpens before he pitches,” said Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke. “He’ll throw a bullpen [Sunday]. He’ll throw a bullpen Wednesday, an up-and-down bullpen Wednesday to make sure we don’t spike too much after his layoff, and then he’ll be eligible to pitch in [next] Saturday’s game.”
Righty Chris Mazza was recalled from the alternate training site to take Eovaldi’s spot on the roster, starting Saturday night’s game against the Nationals.
The Red Sox have had only two set starters in the rotation this season, including Eovaldi and lefty Martín Pérez. With Chris Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez both out for the season, Eovaldi has been thrust into the role of No. 1 starter.
Righty Zack Godley will pitch Sunday’s series finale against the Nats, a spot the Sox had originally been eyeing for Eovaldi. Colten Brewer will take the ball on Monday against the Braves. The Sox haven’t decided yet on a Tuesday starter, though lefty Kyle Hart, who hasn’t been able to pitch beyond the fourth inning in his first three starts, is a possibility.
Without question, Boston’s lack of starting depth will be tested even further this next week without Eovaldi.
“The thing is, we’ve been kind of chasing this thing around with the calf,” Roenicke said. “Like I told you, yesterday’s bullpen [session] was definitely the best we’ve had. I kind of felt like it was going to be awhile anyway. I think being able to backdate it and have a plan for him, we feel really good about him being ready on Saturday.
“So I think even though we know we’re losing him, at least I know now with the MRI that it’s nothing serious, we can get him back on the mound and have him pitch games again. You always wonder what’s going on, how long is this going to last, and we feel pretty good about what this is and when he’ll be back.”
Eovaldi’s most recent start on Aug. 21 against the Orioles was his best of the season, as the hard-throwing righty gave up just one run over seven innings.
For the season, Eovaldi is 2-2 with a 4.98 ERA in six starts.
Pivetta getting stretched out Though there’s still a chance that righty Nick Pivetta will start for the Red Sox this season, it sounds like it might not be for a while.
Pivetta, one of the righties the Red Sox acquired last week for Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree, was optioned to the alternate site after the trade.
Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom drove to Pawtucket this week to start to make a plan with Pivetta.
“We need to stretch him back out again,” Roenicke said. “He hasn’t pitched for a while. Right now, we’re going to stretch him out, and then see where that allows us to bring him up where we feel really confident that he’s ready and he’s extended out and built up enough strength to pitch the innings that we’re going to have him go.”
Devers struggling with routine Third baseman Rafael Devers has been hot in spurts, but he hasn’t been able to get in the same type of groove he had during a breakout 2019 season.
The 23-year-old said some of the things that go with playing in a pandemic have made it challenging for him. One is that players aren’t allowed to study video from the current game between at-bats. The other is as simple as remembering to get his mask for certain pregame activities.
“It’s definitely been much more difficult than before,” Devers said. “The main thing I speak of is [not being able] to watch our swings and stuff, going in after the at-bat, that’s been the biggest difference.
“But yeah, the circumstances that we’re in, sometimes we need to hit and we forget our mask or we have to put something on, it just adds to the difficulties of the year. I definitely don’t want to put any added blame on the video or on the mask. I’m not going well because I’m not doing well. It’s no excuse. But it is different. It does make things a little difficult.”

Padres acquired 1B Mitch Moreland from the Red Sox for OF Jeisson Rosario and 3B Hudson Potts.
Moreland has had a big season, batting .328/.430/.746 with eight home runs and 21 RBI. He would figure to get most of his at-bats in the designated hitter spot. Moreland gives the Padres another weapon against right-handed pitching. The Red Sox are promoting Bobby Dalbec to take Moreland's roster spot and he should see plenty of time at first base, along with Michael Chavis.

Bobby Dalbec called up: Boston Red Sox promote top infield prospect after trading Mitch Moreland to Padres Updated 12:06 PM; Today 11:57 AM Bobby Dalbec

The Red Sox are calling up top infield prospect Bobby Dalbec and hope to have him in the starting lineup Sunday against the Nationals, manager Ron Roenicke announced. Boston traded first baseman Mitch Moreland to the Padres for prospects Hudson Potts and Jeisson Rosario earlier in the day.
Dalbec is on his way up from the club’s alternate training site in Pawtucket and will play Sunday if he makes it in time. The 25-year-old, who was Boston’s fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft, is currently ranked by MLB.com as the third-best prospect in the club’s farm system.
Dalbec hit .239 with 27 home runs and 73 RBIs in 135 games split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last season. Immediately, he’ll join Michael Chavis in the mix for playing time at first base in the majors.
“I think it’s really important to see the possibility of what the future could look like,” Roenicke said. “Getting Bobby up here, who has been a guy who has been on our radar for a long time as one of our top prospects. Knowing the upside to what we think this guy can become. I think it’s important to see him, to see what he can do, and for him also to get comfortable with being in the big leagues. It’s still a weird atmosphere. It’s not the same as it was. I still think the atmosphere, knowing you’re in the big leagues will be important to him.”

Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats · 49m Dalbec and Arauz should play nearly every day the rest of the way. Even when they struggle, which they will, letting them learn and start the adjustments heading into next year will be one of the good outcomes from September.

That's one of the reasons why I'd like some of these guys traded. I don't want to promote a new 1B, a new CF, and maybe a new 2B next April, with no real certainty of how they'll perform.
